“We ain’t tried a lotta things,” Husk points out, smirking anyway. Angel stares at him with exaggeratedly tragic eyes. “That ain’t a ‘no,’ baby,” Husk clarifies, and Angel relaxes again to match his lazy smirk.

“Good, cuz my mouth and pussy are phenomenal, but you should really try all my holes,” Angel says slyly.

Husk lifts his hand away as Angel crosses his legs where they lie over his lap, top foot bouncing lightly in his periphery. With a fresh barrier against Vox’s trained defense, Angel assesses the former medical director’s current state again, tuning out the distant throb of pain in Vox’s ankle — not just a sprain after all. Vox deserves it after the weird shit he’s done to Angel’s feet and ankles in the past: hobbling him with bruising grips during appointments or threesomes; tethering him to the room’s central hard point in the floor with a heavy, solid metal shackles for up to seventy-two hours at a time, the edges barely safe enough not to cut him when he *didn’t* struggle; overstimulating him with painful electric shocks long enough that he couldn’t bare to curl his toes for hours, let alone stand up or run.

Vox liked to make it clear Angel was never going anywhere, and he’s more than happy for the chance to remind this sadistic, dehumanizing, selfish motherfucker why he wanted to control Angel so badly in the first place.

“Look at what you’ve *done,* you annoying little piece of *shit!”* Vox hisses, grin morphing into a sneer. A damaged cable from his prosthetic arm sparks as it sways with his motions. “Do you have *any* idea how long it took for me to convince those stuck up cockweasels on the board that this Facility should even be here? That *I* should be running things?!”

He didn’t name the knuckles after her, just carved a reminder of why he wound up with a set of them in the first place. He hopes the young woman she’s become would understand and forgive him, would see this as survival; this is necessity, not cruelty, even if he’ll take pleasure in certain faces cracking under the force of his fists.

Angel tries not to let the traitorous trickle of arousal stir him, focusing instead on how much he misses the scant few minutes he had curled in Husk’s lap and how he might have that feeling again if he does as he’s told.

Vox hovers there, just out of sight, presumably reading Angel’s chart while slowly drumming his robotic fingers where Angel can watch, dark blue and silver metal clacking against the smooth plastic. Despite his measured breathing, Angel gives away the tension coiled in his muscles with soft creaks and squeaks from white-knuckling the vinyl-topped cushion of the exam table. He tries to keep his legs still, the chain between his shackles noisier than the leather straps locked to his manacles.

Husk scowls when another tray of food scrapes along the concrete floor as an orderly slides it through the locking panel in the bottom of the door. The echoing slam of the metal flap as it swings shut again rattles his nerves, muscles stiff from tension and exhaustion without any decent sleep. He knows he should really try, but he can’t pull it off when Husk has no idea what Angel is doing or enduring while missing from his cell, and he’s already been pulled out and put back in three times, gone for hours on end.

Joints creaking and a vague nausea in his gut, Husk climbs off the cot and shivers at the chill on his feet. He needs a real drink soon or he’ll be fucking useless, but he’s not about to tell these people he’s an alcoholic when it’s such an easy exploit and they already threatened to starve him just to fuck with Angel. He looks down at the food — white-ish mash that might be potatoes, a shriveled, square hunk of brown “meat,” a tiny water bottle, and a waxy-looking apple — and cocks an eyebrow, going still. There’s something else on the tray, too.

A folded piece of scrap paper tucked under the apple.

Leaning toward the door, he tries to peek down the hall both ways for any sign of the orderly that delivered the tray. He spies no one, ducking to scoop the tray up and retreating to the cot, keeping his back to the camera as he sets his food down. The apple rolls onto its side as he swipes up the paper and cracks open the water with one hand to at least pretend he’s not just messing with contraband if someone peeks through the viewing window.

Valentino smirks as he leans comfortably on the bed next to Angel’s head, allowing him one more flinch before going back to playing with his hair, absent and soothing. Angel wants to hate him for it, but it’s helping him not to hyperventilate. He’s definitely still too weak to throw his fear back against the other man; whatever Val stuck Angel with before isn’t gone from his system. He can barely give half a struggle against so many points of resistance, other than moving his head around.

“This is what happens when you play escape artist,” Valentino says.

“I didn’t escape,” Angel hisses bitterly, venom even in his weakened voice. He tries to pull away from Val’s hand again, glaring. “You cunt-fuck assholes let me go so I’d think I did! You get off on fucking with people!” he accuses, a shudder rolling up his body as Val’s fingers curl tightly in his hair, keeping them face-to-face as Angel tries to squirm. “Val, stop!” he says, voice breaking as the pain starts to hit, delayed, but no less sharp.

“I told them you were smart,” Valentino says fondly, grip lessening as he pecks a kiss on Angel’s forehead. Angel cringes and balls his trapped hands into fists, jaw taut. “But I can’t protect you forever, amorcito. You’re not in trouble for running away from home, you’re in trouble for running away from the experiment, baby.” He tuts, stroking Angel’s hair as if he were a beloved pet, a dreamy look in his eye. He lightly drags nails down Angel’s neck before running them back up and around his ear, making him shiver and shut his eyes as he cants his face away. “Pobrecito!” Val coos. Poor thing.

He parks a few blocks away from the Family’s prison-adjacent building and takes a moment to toss back caffeine pills with a swig of whiskey. Maybe it’s a little counterproductive to have both at once, but he can’t go cold turkey and they don’t really have time for him to grab a nap after all. It didn’t take him the full two hours he’d mentioned to Niffty when he didn’t have too many calls left to make on the way here, just checking in with Hal. His men should very literally be looking the other way when Husk sneaks Angel out.

There’s a chance this goes smoothly, that they get out of town before the don and that medical director get wise. If the two don’t meet until tonight, the man whose mention made Angel turn even paler might not even have left that fucked up Facility yet. Husk doesn’t want to get his hopes up, but maybe clinging to the possibility that Angel doesn’t have to see his abusive father or any of his other torturers again is good.

Husk can do this for Angel, and maybe for himself. Maybe, for her, he can save one more life. He’d also be lying if he said he could live with himself if Angel had to go back to the Facility or find out what Enrico has to say to his missing trans kid after ten years pretending Angel was definitely dead already.

Husk is halfway up the second flight of stairs when his phone buzzes. He pulls it out, still moving quickly, but his breath hitches.

Angel has to bite his inner cheek to withhold an impatient groan. “Really?” he scoffs, tossing his head back with an obnoxious laugh, making Husker’s tall ears flick. “My guys don’t fuck off for random smoke breaks, for one thing. They got real discipline, unlike your hellhounds.”

“Izzat so?” Husker hums. “And what do you know about my hellhounds?”

“They ain’t comin’ back when they get killed, for one thing. My souls obviously do,” Angel reasons with a curt nod, shifting to set his feet flat on the ground, lacing both sets of hands together and draping them forward with his elbows on his thighs. God, having Husker watching him relentlessly like this is always a fucking trip. Husker looks at him the same way at overlord meetings, even when Angel shamelessly flirts with him — and Maestro, and Hatchet, and Valentino, when he bothers to show up. Valentino’s hot, yeah, but Husker is a fucking wet dream come to afterlife. “Why not let me and mine handle your security needs? We get the right contract between you ‘n me, and you won’t hafta worry about your vaults or any ‘a those weirdo pricks sneaking back in a week after ya ban ‘em.”

Husker’s gaze narrows ever so slightly. “Excuse me?” he asks darkly.

hey, so. remember how I mentioned there’s a coincidental plot point thing from last chapter into this one?? yeah so I wrote this before s2 aired and I didn’t change anything when it did, I was far too tickled at utilizing the same sort of tactic, which I knew in my heart of hearts would be used the way it was CACKLES ✌️

He feels sick. Was that close? That felt *close.* He can’t tell if DiLuca realizing Angel is an adult helps him or hurts him in this situation. Would he have gone further if he’d known? Wait, fuck, he said that was that the only reason he didn’t! He’d definitely been only half a second from pulling Angel’s sweats down before he *bit* the bastard to stave him off the first time.

Swallowing a heavy lump in his throat, Angel carefully crawls back onto the cot and huddles against the wall, hugging the pillow. He’ll have to plan his bathroom breaks carefully, getting the sense DiLuca is willing to perv on him through that stupid wired window in the door. At least having the lights off might give him some semblance of privacy there.

The next few hours are tense and incredibly boring. Angel has nothing to do in here, and his brain is a fucking curse when he’s idle, running impossible scenarios and flitting off on pointless tangents. He thinks about how he can get out of the city once he’s out of this building. He thinks about risking a run back to his old house to see if Pops still has certain caches in the same places Angel never dared take the time to look when he ran away. That could seed fleeing the city and buying a few meals and a place to stay once he’s far enough away. He could use it to pay a long hauler or stick to his original plan of whoring his way out of this godforsaken place. Sometimes he thinks he should’ve done that long ago, but then he wouldn’t have met Rosie, and he wouldn’t trade the time he had with her for anything.

This is also the longest chapter thus far (18k+ words). I couldn't bring myself to break it up, partly because I wanted to keep the perspective switch to every other chapter, because it's just a very long scene, and because I didn't want everyone to suffer for what would wind up being a very annoying/stressful cliffhanger if I did break this up.

totally apropos of nothing... i genuinely wrote this and the following chapter ahead of season 2 releasing. if there's a terrible coincidence to a plot point, i promise it really was just a coincidence that made me squawk and point at the screen when it came up. 🙃

“Why, you on a diet?” Husk asks casually, drinking from his own black coffee, because it’s something. He needs to figure out who Angel is, and starting with mundane chatter is the most insufferable and also unfortunately best option.

“You could say that,” Angel mutters grudgingly, returning to his omelet and going slower this time. “Not like they’d ever give me enough sugar to get fat anyway, dunno why it’s such a big deal to let me have it.”

“Who, your home chef?” he tries to joke, wry and a little snide. Angel levels him with a disbelieving frown, unimpressed.

“The cafeteria, dumbass,” he says dryly. Husk cocks an eyebrow and Angel’s entire face morphs into shock.

“You got a whole-ass cafeteria at your place?” Husk goes on without further comment, letting him have the extremely mild insult because “dumbass” is hardly worth caring about when it’s so much better than flirting or cowering. Angel’s momentary panic for talking back ebbs slowly, but he tenderly rubs his injured face with one hand and gets himself another bite before continuing.

“‘S not my place.”

“You got family?”

“Not— anymore.”

“For you,” Whiskers clarifies with a bushy eyebrow cocked, stepping closer and sitting on the arm of the chair in the middle of the room. It’s small enough in here that he’s still only a few feet away. “Figured you could use more than a fuckin’ power bar. They taste like shit anyway.”

“Yeah,” Angel agrees, voice rough with sleep and still faintly sore from Val’s nightly visit before Angel had enacted his escape plan. He heals better with real food, anyway. “What do I owe you?” he asks before he can think about it, a habit after every “extra” or “secret” thing he’d been surreptitiously “given” at the Facility, either from fellow freaks, orderlies he’d charmed for favors, or Valentino. Nothing is ever free, and it was his father who really taught him that.

“Don’t bite me,” the guy says flatly, staring with the same tone, and Angel blinks innocently up at him, letting a tiny smirk quirk his lips. He ignores the way the guard’s golden gaze burns into him, the way Angel believes that’s all he’s asking, because it’s nice to pretend sometimes but he’s in too much deep shit to get comfortable this quickly. He has some sense of self-preservation, however tiny a sliver that it might be.

“Deal,” Angel says with a grin, and he holds his connected hands out, palms up, tucking his chin slightly to look at him through his lashes, a naturally thick and long feature that he’s always liked about himself and has probably helped him out in a few scrapes even before he oozed sexuality, if he’s honest. That, and people are usually at least temporarily fascinated by his heterochromia.
