During our hearing on ICE's use of force in the killing of Lorenzo Salgado, I asked about ICE and DHS's claims that their policies are making us safer. The answer was clear: they're not making us safer, they're putting law-abiding people in danger, and they're empowering dangerous people instead.

In the House, we keep hearing Republicans talk about waste, fraud, and abuse. But President Trump has dismantled the agencies and organizations designed to combat fraud, and he has pardoned at least 70 allies, donors, and others who have been convicted of fraud. These things don't add up.

A year ago tonight, the storms that brought floods to central Texas began, leaving more than 100 people dead & devastating so many families here at home & across the state. Today, I joined my colleagues on the House steps to mark Gun Violence Awareness Month, wearing orange to demonstrate our commitment to people in #TX07 and across the country who have experienced gun violence. We must work together to #EndGunViolence.

The long fight for women's equal rights led to the enactment of the Equal Pay Act #OTD in 1963. Despite this important law, women today earn only 81¢ on the dollar compared to men. I'm committed to ensuring that women receive equal pay for equal work, and I'll keep fighting to close the wage gap.

This Congress has utterly failed to meet the moment and to meet the needs of Americans, forcing through a bill to fund ICE and CBP for three years without any reforms.

Glad to talk with Craig Cohen on Houston Matters about what I see happening in Washington right now: the Republican-controlled Congress rubber-stamping terrible policies and now, potentially, a $2 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund for the President. This is not how it is supposed to work.

#OTD in 1919, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the 19th Amendment. It's particularly important to remember now, as some in power seek to roll back the rights Americans have fought so hard to secure, including the right to vote. Progress takes persistence, and must be affirmatively preserved.

More than 25 years ago, the FDA approved mifepristone as safe and effective. The Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act makes clear that the FDA’s authority is real and that no state can override it to deny women access to reproductive freedom.
