Sweet hummingbird sipping at my late summer petunias. So pretty. So shy. #BlackHills #SouthDakota #BirdWatching
Some mornings the Black Hills seem reluctant to fully awaken. This morning was one of those mornings. The mist settled low across the meadow and turned the world unusually quiet. In the distance, Elkhorn Mountain rose through the haze, visible only enough to remind us of its presence.
Some things are beautiful because they’re new - others because they’ve lasted. This Rookwood vase belonged to my mother-in-law and is more than a century old. The daylily, dahlia, grasses and coleus came from my garden this morning. A hundred years apart. Don't they seem happy together? #flowers
It's crazy here. A half-million motorcycles have descended on my corner of South Dakota. So many people in their 70's on bikes they can't handle. Dozens of crashes and several deaths already - and the Sturgis Rally has just started. I just want to get to the grocery store alive, people!
I headed out for a walk yesterday afternoon and apparently interrupted nap time. Mama and her twin babies were tucked into the shade right beside our barn. We stood there for a bit, quietly sizing each other up, before they decided I’d gotten close enough and loped off together.
I lived in Oregon for more than forty years - in the Portland area for most of that time. Even when Mount St. Helens erupted, the air quality was not this bad. I just weep at this news and at the destruction throughout my former home.
Daylilies seem like such average, unassuming flowers, until one decides it's the star of the garden. This beauty just opened this morning and is holding court in my garden as if it knows exactly how lovely it is.
Thunder, lightning, pea-sized hail & torrential rain have forced attendees at Trump's Mt.Rushmore program to shelter in place. Thunderstorm warning in effect til 8 P.M. Guess Mother Nature is no more fond of Trump being here than we are. Welcome to the Black Hills, a$$hole. #MtRushmore #4thOfJuly
"1776" I love this musical. Just a great reminder that the kinds of issues these early leaders faced are the same issues we are facing today. And to watch it at the Black Hills Playhouse? Perfection! #SouthDakota #BlackHills #BlackHillsPlayhouse
Driving across South Dakota. These clouds have big feelings! ⛅️ 🌥 🌦 ☁️
I honestly wasn't expecting much from these first-year peonies, and then they did this. Into my favorite retro vase they went immediately!
Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Hidden treasure in North Dakota. We saw 8 of these "cinnamon" bison babies this evening. #bison #NorthDakota #NationalParks
Roar!!! Huge storm yesterday in the southern Black Hills. Wind, rain and baseball sized hail! Left us with clouds that have some very big feelings. #SouthDakota #BlackHills #weather
From The Other 98%. So many tides. So much turning. Way to go Georgia! #elections #Georgia #LGBTQ+
We stood behind the Basel Minster (Cathedral) to view the 1879 Wettsteinbrücke (bridge). With its graceful arches of steel and stone, it spans the lovely Rhine River in Basel, Switzerland. Cars, pedestrians and trams move effortlessly over it, uniting the two parts of the city divided by the river.
Leaving #Innsbruck this morning. Its name is wonderfully literal: “Inns Bruck” means “bridge over the Inn,” the fast-flowing river cutting through the city. Beginning in 1187, this was the first, for centuries the only, bridge across the river. Next stop: #Bern. #BlueskyTravel #TravelByTrain
We took a nine hour train ride today from Budapest to Innsbruck, Austria. This is the view from our window in the hotel. Can't wait to explore! #ViewFromMyWindow #Austria #BlueskyTravel
In Budapest today for this incredible celebration and we saw the EU flag everywhere - even in the restaurant where we ate lunch.
The EU flag flies once again in #Hungary as Péter Magyar is today sworn in as the new Prime Minister. We are in #Budapest for the #regimechange party. Tens of thousands of people are gathered here to celebrate!
I'm in Hungary, on the eve of the inauguration of a new leader. Reminders are everywhere of conquest, betrayal, resistance, and survival. This visit has been a needed reminder that people can rise up, reclaim their future, and choose a better path. Right now, here in Budapest, there is joy. Örülj!
Heavy snow today, draped over blooming crabapple trees in downtown Hill City, reminds us that winter’s not quite ready to let go. Beauty and stubbornness in the same frame. #BlackHills #HillCity #Snow
Love the contrast. Just so stunning out here. #viewthroughmywindow
Looking for a mate or just looking out? Either way, neighborhood watch is very serious business up here! This marmot has eyes on everything from behind its rock fortress. #BlackHills #wildlife
Baby alert!! These are the first for this spring. Just so cute. #CusterStatePark #BlackHills
The rain clouds are moving in and the light is amazing. #BlackHills #Elkhorn
I woke up around 2 a.m. and was so entranced by the moon shining through that I had to grab my phone. It is the Waning Gibbous phase. #cellphonePhotography #moon #BlueskyPhotographers
