I'm a Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg National Military Park and retired sociology professor who's eager to build a better world. ("Scarce" like money: does not rhyme with "farce," although sometimes....) This is my personal account.
Have a look at the phrase on the reverse of the half-dollar. The dime's redesign is idiocy. This one is cruel irony given the administration's attacks on science and learning. The quotation is from a letter by James Madison alluding to Thomas Jefferson's creation of the University of Virginia.
We've got trouble right here in River City. The U.S. is sliding faster toward authoritarianism than any recent Western nation. Image through @pkrugman.bsky.social . substackcdn.com/image/fetch/...
A bit of levity, if I may: of Gen. John Robinson it was said, “The hairiest general… in a much bearded army.”
Abraham Lincoln delivered the greatest speech in American history on this date in 1863, his Gettysburg Address. The Soldiers' National Cemetery Monument stands over the graves of 3,512 Union soldiers who fell at Gettysburg four months before.
Because, if you're like me, you feel like shit after the election, here's something I hope will perk you up. It's from Bryce Canyon National Park and was taken last week.
