Took my daughters to the Bunker Hill memorial in my hometown and read them the Declaration of Independence. Had to bribe them with a donut but we got through it.

I went looking for July 4 activities locally for me and my daughter and I found not only pride but fresh strength looking at my hometown's statement on the holiday.

Pepperell, with Liberty and Justice for All
It has been 163 years since the ending of slavery in the United States, 106 years since women have had the right to vote, and fifty-seven years since the ‘Stonewall Riots’ brought gay rights to the forefront of American conversations on rights and equality. Yet we still have a long way to go before we can fully embrace the words in our Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Pepperell, like the nation as a whole, has struggled with accepting some of these self-evident truths and allowing all to experience their unalienable Rights. Persons who appear different from ourselves are often not trusted or not embraced in insular communities. As we enter the middle of the 21ˢᵗ century, with communication, information, and travel so readily available, insular communities don’t truly exist. Sadly, insular attitudes do.
Let us recognize the inherent value that our differences in language, culture, color, gender, and identity bring to the world. These differences make all of us better, stronger, and free. Liberty is not just for me and you, it is for everyone.
Important conversations are required to keep a light on this. These can be positive and negative, sometimes simultaneously. MeToo, Black Lives Matter, and Pride events are examples of focusing the light and having uplifting events and sometimes difficult conversations. These will continue until everyone has unalienable rights.
We all need to do our part to make Pepperell a leader in acceptance, freedom of expression, and protection of rights.
