Regret is a Two Way Street

When I was born, you tried to stay
But only when it was convenient
At age two, you were replaced
So you left. You left a toddler.

We met again, a surprise to me
I was quiet; you were awkward
But I was told I needed my father
So I started accepting you.

But you tallied every penny up
Kept track of all you'd spent on your child
You told me in college, and for Christmas?
You'd reduce my debt to you by a couple hundred dollars
I should be grateful.

Then we had our kid; and you left again.
Rug pulled out from under swollen ankles.
We adopted him out but you still were pissed
I was fucking HOMELESS and you didn't care.

When you set me up for impossible tasks

To admit to myself what I knew was wrong:

Her tears land and roll down my cheeks

But now her presence bothers me
When will she give me the relief?

Seeking Shadows

I turned off the lights
Hoping to lure out my shadow
And once my eyes adjusted
I found no shadows in sight

I turned on all the lights instead
Knowing that the brighter the light
The more robust and deep the shadows are
But I was blinded and could not see

So I chose instead to turn on just one light
And suddenly just on the floor
Stretching out long before me
At last, my shadow was there!

No matter how far I push myself
Something has me knotted up tight
So that the more I pull away
The tighter my restraints become
Yes, I am full of panic
Because freedom was mine
I remember her grace of movement

I've seem to have lost my voice
Have you seen it?
I think it was last composing
Some deeply emotional piece

As I remodel my old self
I'll start just below the surface
Scraping, scratching, clawing
Digging down deep

There among the rubble

Tendrils of the Undulating Dark

As through some whispered reverie
From some shadow-laden origins,
Ghastly sights wore upon my mind,
As I laid in bed, solitary and alone
Such, that rest was not found.

In these quiet hours, between states
Dreaming and conscious, it was
That the very shadows in my room
Sprang very much alive and danced
And my breath was stolen by the sight.

Some acted out dramas of the day
Others reveal my own darkest desires
In their frenzied interactions on my walls
And I, paralyzed by fear and curiosity,
Must have surely fallen into dreaming then.

For the shadows became etched faces
Both known, and unknown to me
And those faces became aged bodies,
And those bodies became diverse, massive crowds
And I was lost, and alone, among them.
