FIP stands for Fielding Independent Pitching.

It is an advanced baseball statistic designed to measure a pitcher’s true effectiveness by isolating only the outcomes the pitcher can directly control (strikeouts, walks, hit-by-pitches, and home runs) while completely ignoring the defense behind them.

Traditional statistics like ERA (Earned Run Average) heavily penalize a pitcher when their fielders commit errors or when soft contact turns into cheap base hits due to bad luck.

FIP strips away all batted balls put into play to answer a simple question: What would this pitcher's ERA look like if they had a perfectly average, league-standard defense?

Why FIP Matters

Removes Luck: Research has proven that pitchers have virtually no control over whether a ball hit into the field of play lands for a hit or goes straight to a fielder. FIP removes this uncontrollable variance.

Predictive Value: FIP is much better at predicting a pitcher's future performance than ERA.

Evaluates Pitcher vs. Team: It isolates the pitcher's specific skills (power, control, prevention of hard contact) separate from the quality of the team's outfield or infield.

Who Said it First?

While Williams is the one everyone remembers, several writers beat him to the punch:

Don Noel (1995): Wrote the detailed column in The Hartford Courant suggesting patches on blazers based on donation size ($2,500 for a medallion, etc.).

Jim Hightower (1999): The political commentator suggested mandating sponsor logos on candidates like NASCAR drivers.

Paul Halvey (2004): A columnist for the Illinois newspaper The Life made a similar suggestion two years before Williams' movie.

It’s one of those rare cases where a satirical idea was so "right" that multiple people arrived at it independently before a global superstar turned it into a household quote.

Don Noel: The Corporate Politician

Gov. John G. Rowland just unveiled a state-branded racing car for the Indy Lights series, and it got me thinking. If we’re putting "Spirit of CONNECTICUT" on a chassis to lure tourists, why not put corporate logos on politicians? It might finally expose the baleful, hidden influence of big money by making it impossible to miss.

Sports are already high-speed billboards. Tennis stars, golfers, and basketball players are walking advertisements. Even the America’s Cup and hockey goalie mitts are covered in logos. If constituents followed voting records as closely as batting averages, democracy might actually win for once.

Politicians should wear the logos of the people who bought their elections. Since they aren't used to wearing their hearts on their sleeves, let them wear their wallets instead. They claim campaign cash doesn't buy influence; if so, let's give those "selfless" donors some visibility.

I propose a uniform: blazers in party colors, adorned with patches based on contribution levels:

$2,500: A modest two-inch medallion.

$5,000: A three-inch patch.

$10,000: A whole lapel.

Top Donors: Governors and senators could carry placards, pennants, or balloons for their biggest benefactors.

Whenever the cameras roll, the sponsors get their subliminal advertising. Just like sports fans, voters might even buy the products their "heroes" endorse.

Donors would finally be sure their messages are seen, even if the legislation they want doesn't pass. Politicians could sell space without the guilt. Of course, we could just try public financing so office seekers don't have to sell their souls to special interests—but if they're going to keep taking the money, the least they can do is wear the ad.

The "Ubiquity" Filter: The editors admitted they were drawn to people whose music "echoes through grocery-store aisles and TikTok videos." That’s a fancy way of saying if you haven't sold 50 million records or gone viral, your "greatness" doesn't count.

The Technical Erasure: Eminem is arguably the most influential technical writer in the history of hip-hop, and Maynard is a literal architect of modern progressive rock. But they aren't "safe" grocery-store background music. One is too aggressive; the other is too intellectual/occult.

The "Industry" Echo Chamber: When you ask 250 insiders, you're asking people who work for the labels that profit from the big names. It’s hard to imagine a Sony or Universal exec voting for an enigma like Maynard who actively avoids the "celebrity" machine.

One post on one social media platform isn't going to get balls/strikes changed, obviously (I assume obviously, but *some people*...), but here's a big ol' extrapolation to explain the notion.

You’re tapping into a major glitch in how we’ve been applying tech to sports. Humans aren't high-speed cameras; we’re prediction engines. When a ball is screaming toward the plate at triple digits, the batter’s brain isn't calculating the exact circumference of the sphere—it’s tracking a probability cloud centered on the ball's path.

If the heart of that cloud is outside the box, the brain screams "Ball!" Even if the physical edge of the ball technically shaved a millimeter off the corner, the call feels like a betrayal of physics.
The Human Hardware Limitation

The current ABS system is like a high-end gaming PC running a physics engine at 1,000fps, while the human batter is stuck on a legacy 60Hz monitor.

The Tracking Bias: Humans naturally track the center of mass of moving objects. At 100mph, you don't see the "edges" of the ball; you see the trajectory.

The Frame Rate Problem: Since the ball travels roughly 1.4 feet in the time it takes to blink, the batter is essentially hitting a blur. If the center of that blur is out, the strike call feels like the umpire (or the robot) is just being a pedant.

Aligning Math with Reality

It’s a rare case where making the technology "less" forgiving actually makes the game feel more fair. We should be using tech to enforce human logic, not to force humans to bow down to robot math. Being "technically correct" is usually the worst kind of correct when it ruins the flow of a game.

It's basically the ultimate "middleman" tax, right? Not even remotely related to the hospital in question, but it sounds like they were typically-staffed, and a very wealthy family is seeking to make even more money from their son's untimely and tragic passing due to what seems to be excessive alcohol consumption. There's a very clear lesson here.
