Zhang Yimou makes a very Chinese Cinema Paradiso. I really enjoyed this. Enjoyed watching the relationships between the Fan and the Fugitive and the Fugitive and Liu. Unsurprisingly, it's really nicely shot and staged as well.
Now my local Curzon has shut my local indie is carrying on this nonsense. Dogs should not be in cinemas.
You have to applaud the effort and invention that has gone into this low-budget sci-fi oddity. The results are mixed and often weird but the journey itself is mostly intriguing.
Very much a tribute to the late comedian's genius without much on the side of balance. Very focussed on his work. A great reminder of just how funny he was.

There's a nice idea here, a committed performance from Navarrette and the shock moment is done very well, but I was bored far too often. Too much dwelling, not enough nuance. To many hmm character choices. There's definitely craft there though.
While it might be far from perfect, Slither is a reminder of the kind of fun horror films we used to get. Really well done. Highly watchable. Some impressive effects and gore. A horror romp which feels entirely fresh today.
This is my favourite sub-genre of documentary - the competitive weirdoes. It's amusing and interesting enough but it struggles to fill a meagre runtime as there's simply not enough. Worth a watch but fairly forgettable.
We appear to have a really limp sub-genre in horror of people go to retreat and then get murdered in revenge. Opus is no worse or better than the other ones really. The ending is entirely limp and the build up needed to be more than skin deep.
A mix of Ready or Not and John Wick. Some interesting ideas but the action sequences are poorly choreographed and repetitive. Lots of blood everywhere and zero jeopardy or tension. The half-arsed depiction of the Devil sums it all up.
I'm over an hour in and at no point have they bothered to take their daughter to a hospital. They both should be locked up.
There's actually quite a lot to like here. Music is used really well and it looks incredible. The acting is also pretty good. And while the whole curse thing isn't new the approach is quite interesting. But...it's also underwritten with an increasingly poor second half.
I've finally found a perfect example of bad casting to match this absolute classic.

A film that both looks like it has a decent budget but also seems to have been directed by someone with little idea about storytelling. There's a good idea here but it's so ham-fistedly done, badly written and poorly acted that it is largely uninteresting.
There's an obvious comparison with Backrooms but this is far, far superior. Extremely clever. Very well directed and acted. Intriguing. Fascinating. Immersive. Great stuff.

Entertaining enough, especially when it gets going. It's had not to like it but there's too much nothing in it as well. Random nonsense which goes on and on. The action is good fun though.
Another poorly made creepypasta horror film. More guff from A24. Lots of pans of the house. Lots of unsubtle imaginary and sledgehammer symbolism. There's nothing here other than an idea.
I did a lot of ugly crying watching this. It's a very heartfelt tribute to Candy. His life story told through his family and famous long-term friends. There are some very moving moments and stories. A testament to a guy everyone liked. But the best bit is seeing so much of him again.
Really strange doc. Fascinating subject. Some great investigative journalism. Some barbarity. But, too many close ups and whistful stares and the interviews felt really odd.
Entertaining, thought-provoking and extremely well made. Could easily be a lot longer and in depth but works as a good primer..
