We’ve had a good soaking and lots of humidity … apparently prime conditions for huge mushrooms. I believe this one is called a white fly agaric, a rare hallucinogenic mushroom found in the Appalachians. Quit licking your lips, buddy. #dogs #lovedogs #WNC #mushrooms

First fawns of the season. This beautiful family out for a sunset stroll is a quite young doe with two spotted fawns The doe is looking toward a road as cars pass while one fawn stands close and a second one looks to the grass for something to eat. The fawns have beautiful white spots indicating that they are part of this year’s baby deer here in Western North Carolina.

Geese ... large and in charge. A group of geese head across the road. They seemed to be ignoring the few cars that had to stop. Luckily, none of us ignored the geese.

Here's a hollow trunk I saw on a hike yesterday. It looked like a totem pole that was melting away. The reddish wood has rotted and was crumbling from within. Yet it still stood tall. It probably once was a thick trunk. #ThickTrunkTuesday

School's out, but adventures continue. Stopped at my favorite bakery this morning and saw this cute bunch of birdwatchers. They found a nest tucked into the corner of that window.

It also reminds us to be careful about what we're promised. Freedom was granted through the Emancipation Proclamation signed on January 1, 1863. Texas kept it a secret. Happy Juneteenth, everyone.

Text says: "Juneteenth celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when enslaved people of African descent located in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from the slavery system in the United States."

Sure feels like summer's coming in Western North Carolina. I meant to take a photo of the three men in a boat and I caught them, the fish that one of them is pulling from the water and a woman walking her sweet dog in the background. Couldn't have timed it better on purpose. #photography #WNC

My little guy definitely gets me up and out early. And he keeps me in good spirits all day. Here we are in the middle of a nice long hike today. ... Goldens are big and lovely. My guy is 12 pounds, which worked out today since I had to carry him a little on the last leg of the hike.

This carp is about 9 or 10 inches long. It was seen on May 4, 2026, floating and swerving with several other fish in a lake in North Carolina. A friend who fishes a lot says males and females thrash together in shallow, weedy water to release and fertilize eggs, which then stick to submerged vegetation or gravel. The eggs will hatch in 3-8 days, depending how warm the water is.
