This. Smoky sunset. Yesterday evening, a five-minute walk from our house in Calgary. #YYC

A smoky sunset hangs over a quiet lake, filling the sky with muted shades of beige, peach, and dusty orange. The sun appears as a small, bright orange-white disc, softened by thick wildfire smoke. Its golden reflection forms a shimmering, broken path across the calm water toward the foreground. Along the distant shoreline, dark silhouettes of spruce and other trees stretch across the horizon. This honey #bee has collected a tiny bit of black pollen from a poppy anemone (Anemone coronaria), also called a garden anemone or windflower. The poppy is one of a very few flowers that gives black pollen. By the way, this species does not yield nectar. #bees #flowers

A close-up photograph shows a brilliant crimson-red flower filling most of the frame. The flower has eight broad, silky petals arranged around a prominent black center. Surrounding the dark, dome-shaped center is a dense ring of tiny black stamens, while the base of each petal fades to white, creating a striking star-like pattern.

A single honey bee is perched on the lower right side of the flower’s center. Its golden-brown body with black bands is dusted lightly with pollen as it explores the bloom, likely collecting pollen rather than nectar.

One of the biggest of all bees, this is an Eastern Carpenter bee, working on Salvia. It is not native here in Calgary. The photo was sent to me today by someone in Florida. #bee #bees #flower

Bees in my Calgary backyard last week. I had removed the lid (first photo) then added four honey boxes that are filling up in this week’s 26C heat.
