Back in the 00s I worked with LeBron’s team on a massive series of promotional comics, in-store standees, webcomics, NASCAR car-wraps, PowerADE packaging, etc, etc… But! We got some incredible creators on the project (like this cover by Jock) and LeBron turned out to be a humble, really nice guy!

The cover to King James by Gary Phillips, and Damion Scott, with a cover by Jock. It was a promotional series by DC Comics, starring LeBron James. A lot of this story was absolutely insane; a mix of basketball, James Bond style spy intrigue, professional wrestling style action, and a commercial for PowerADE.

There is an interesting sort of parallel to US politics here in that Catholic Church has been negotiating making concessions to the ultra-conservative, anti-modernization SSPX for decades to no avail. There’s no appeasing or compromising with the hard right. You accept their beliefs… or you don’t.

My dog is a purebred Boston Terrier. And he’s pushing 50 lbs. He’s a tank. Like a sea lion in a dog body. Boston Terriers are not supposed to be this big. I think he might be the biggest Boston Terrier on Earth.

This is Buck. The largest Boston Terrier on Earth, coming in at 49.5 lbs. He loves food (obviously), cuddling, and naps. He is a very good boy.

This is a chart showing the average size and weight of Boston Terriers. According to PetMD (and pretty much every source online), Boston Terriers are supposed to clock in at 12-25 lbs.

I could probably do a whole series of posts about weird shit that we got away with at DC Comics simply because nobody cared about "Creative Services." Like the time we got guys like Eduardo Risso and Paul Pope to do a fashion inserts starring Young Justice.

Someone had the insane idea to promote fashion inside issues of DC Comics. We hired a fashion writer to provide the copy and artists like Eduardo Risso (best know for the adult noir Vertigo series 100 Bullets) and Paul Pope (best known for his Eisner-award winning work on Batman: Year 100 and Battling Boy) for the visuals. I'm reasonably sure that nobody but those that were involved in making the project cared about the project.

I think about this a lot! The use of communal internet phrases as a sort shorthand is annoying but then just last night I read this (from ON TYRANNY by Timothy Snyder) and now I hate it even more.

Be Kind to our Language. Avoid pronouncing the phrases everyone does. Think up your own way of speaking, even if only to convey that thing you think everyone is saying. Make an effort to separate yourself from the internet. Read books.
