"So, magic, huh?" Claude asked. "Where'd you learn that? Kind of a weird skill for a merc to have, huh?"
Byleth turned her head to look down at him but didn't say anything. Her mouth was a straight, thin line.
"I notice no one else in Jeralt's company uses faith magic," Claude said. "Bandages, vulneraries, things like that - much more practical. Have you always known how to do this?"
"If you talk less, you'll save your energy," Byleth said. "Which is probably for the best for when you've lost this much blood."
Claude tried to wave his hand with easy nonchalance, but found his hand wasn't really moving the way he wanted it to. He settled for another lopsided smile. "I thought talking was good! Keeps me from losing consciousness." He tried to sit up. "It was only one hit, anyways - what happened to the rest of those bandits? I thought there were half a dozen of them, but the next thing I knew -"
Byleth grabbed Claude by the chin and pushed him back down to the ground. She tilted his face so he was looking up at her, her other hand still pressing against the gash in his side.
"No more questions, no more moving," she said. "You want practical healing? Stop wasting air."
Claude tried to nod, and sort of succeeded.
"Yes, ma'am," he said. "Whatever you say, Teach."

I love that they explained the grading scale; we love to see clear rubrics and consistent norming. Anyways hit me!

Give me a fanfiction trope and l'll grade it:

• A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it.

• B: Like it. Not one of my bigger cravings, but it can scratch a certain itch if I'm in the right mood.

• C: Neutral. A good author might be able to sell it, but a bad one will kill it deader than dead.

• D: Not my favorite. I avoid it if I can, but it won't necessarily put me off reading something.

• F: Hate it. Will immediately make me nope out of a fic.

a little drabble for @cuttinggale.bsky.social about Alear and Emblem!Marth and Sommie. Is Sommie a dog? I think Sommie is an artist, like Gonzo.

"Did you ever have a dog?" Alear asked. "When you were - a kid, or whatever?"
Marth hummed thoughtfully and held out his hand again. Sommie ran at him full speed, running through the hand like it was made of mist. Marth had described the sensation as "a bit like petting the creature" earlier that day. It was as yet undetermined what it was like for Sommie.
"My family had several dogs. Hunting hounds, mostly. And a beloved spaniel, I remember," Marth said, thoughtfully.
Sommie barked, twice. Marth held out his hand again. Sommie ran at top speed, which wasn't very fast.
"It's not really the same as actually petting a dog, is it," Alear said, a small note of apology in his voice.
Marth shrugged as Sommie ran through him again, tail wagging and legs moving in every possible direction.
"Perhaps not," he conceded. "But then, Sommie isn't really like a dog, to begin with." Sommie barked again. It was hard to say whether the bark was in agreement or not. But Marth didn't seem to mind, either way.

Annette and Felix both stood, leaning against the wall, their arms crossed in front of them. As Annette was steadfastly refusing to look at Felix, she likely did not notice the similarities in their stance.
As if she could feel Felix’s eyes on her, she turned her head suddenly to glare up at him. “Why are you staring like that?” she demanded.
Felix raised an eyebrow, unimpressed.
“Your hair’s different,” he said.
“What!” Annette said, her cheeks turning yet a deeper shade of red. “After five years of not seeing each other, that’s all you can think of to say to me?”
Felix shrugged.
“Besides!” Annette added, pointing an accusing finger in his direction. “Your hair is different, too! Why’s it all – down and – long and – straight? Huh?”
“Ugh. Yeah.” Felix ran his fingers through his hair, pulling it back into a ponytail. It did little good. His hair fell back into perfect place, and Annette huffed a little. Her own hair was beginning to frizz at the edges in the night rain. “It came undone during the battle. When I took down that merchant.”
Annette muttered something that sounded suspiciously like “show off” and turned away. Felix frowned, running his fingers through his hair again. Sure, maybe running ahead of Sylvain and Ingrid and single-handedly taking out the leader of the bandits hadn’t shown a particular sense of team spirit or cooperation. But that damn merchant had been about to attack Annette. Surely there was some awful storybook that Annette and Ashe would have loved that featured similar poor battle tactics and celebrated them.

“I’ll run slower next time,” Felix snapped.
“Good,” Annette said.
“Good,” Felix said.
They resumed their stances, leaning against the crumbling wall outside the monastery gates, watching Byleth and Dimitri and Gilbert talk in the distance. Felix scowled, watching them. He was so busy focusing on scowling that he almost jumped when Annette nudged him.
He looked over. She held out a ribbon, knotted at one end, a deep shade of blue that made Felix’s heart ache for reasons he didn’t care to think about.
“I wear it around my wrists,” she said. “For emergencies.”
“Ah.” Felix said. He took the ribbon, staring at it for a moment. “I’m not really into jewelry,” he said after a moment.
“Ugh!” Annette rolled her eyes. “Five years on and you’re still the worst villain, Felix.”
Felix turned away to hide his smile. But after a moment, he slipped the ribbon over his hand, letting it settle on his wrist. For emergencies.
He’d fix his hair later.

I tried writing some super short flash fics, which was lots of fun. Here's one about how Sacred Stones is pretty fucked up.

Orson wrote to her every day. Long letters, full of his day to day present and his plans for the endless future that stretched before them. He wrote in code, a code that only she could read, so that the messenger carrying his letters north would never know how deep and treacherous his love truly was.
She never wrote back, but it didn’t matter. He had a letter from her, folded three times over. He tucked it against his heart, and it kept in him safe on the battlefield and off. He only unfolded it when he was alone, completely alone, late at night in his tent or taking the midnight watch across enemy lines. Candlelight or moonlight or pitch black, it didn’t matter. He could read it. He knew the words by heart.
Darling . . . darling . . . darling.
Orson read her words, and planned his reply, and dreamed of the day he would hear her voice again.

Citrinne took a slow sip of her tea before setting the cup down precisely in the saucer.
“If you must know, Diamant, dear,” she said with equal precision. “I don’t like all this sneaking and subterfuge.”
Diamant scowled at his own teacup. He’d drained it in one sip ages ago, but Citrinne hadn’t bothered to offer him a second cup, and he knew better than to break her rules of etiquette when he wanted something.
“I’m not asking you to like it,” he said. “I’m just asking you to do it.”
“Well!” Citrinne scoffed, leaning back and crossing her arms in a posture that was a mirror of Diamant’s, but that she would insist was much more proper. “If you don’t want my opinion, I don’t see why you’re coming to me. Ask Alcryst, or Jade, or one of your –”
“No, Citrinne – please.” Diamant sat up quickly, pushing the envelope that lay between them across the table. No name was on it, but a wax design of flowers sealed the back. “You know Father doesn’t approve. If word got out that I was sending – you know everyone, Citrinne. You can make sure it gets to her.”
Citrinne picked up the envelope, turning it over in her hands thoughtfully, even playfully.
“And what makes you think I wouldn’t just open it as soon as I got back to my room?” she asked lightly. “I’m so bored for entertainment around her. And this promises to be entertaining.”
“You wouldn’t,” Diamant said. “Because you’re getting all the entertainment you need torturing me right now. And besides, you never could stand my handwriting.”
Citrinne giggled, but she slipped the letter out of sight. She reached for the teapot and leaned forward to pour Diamant another cup of tea.
“I certainly didn’t,” she said. “But if Princess Ivy can stand it, I suppose that’s all that matters.”

One of the tags this year was "divine pulse angst," which I think is very fun. Here's my take on it with Dimileth, for @vannen.bsky.social.

Byleth spoke into the darkness. “Do you want to tell me about it?”
Dimitri didn’t always tell her about his nightmares. It sometimes helped when he did.
He didn’t speak for a long time, resting his head against her shoulder. It was a surprise when he finally spoke, but Byleth didn’t flinch.
“I was hit by an arrow in the battle at Enbarr,” he said. “But not just me. Felix fell to a mage. Then Annette. Our front line crumbled, and when I turned, I was hit.”
Byleth said nothing, though she kept running her fingers through Dimitri’s hair, knowing it had a calming effect.
“You were the last thing I saw, before I – woke up,” Dimitri continued. “Your eyes. They were so desperate.”
“I see,” Byleth said softly.
It was quiet now, Dimitri’s breathing the only sound in the darkened bedroom. When Byleth spoke again, her voice was oddly strangled.
“I’m sorry.”
“It was just a nightmare, beloved,” Dimitri said, a reminder to them both. “It didn’t actually happen.” He turned, wrapping her in his arms. “But I’m glad you never had to see such an awful thing.”
Byleth nodded against him, and said nothing in reply.

here's a Dimiclaude college AU that I wrote for @yanyan46e20.bsky.social. The Whitman reference does imply the existence of Abraham Lincoln in modern day Fodlan. Or at least the existence of Dead Poets Society? Best to not overthink it.

When I was in high school I had a tshirt with a picture of the cover of one of those Little Miss children's books. It was from like Hot Topic or Kohls or something. It was Little Miss Sunshine, but I really wish I'd been able to get one with my true id represented.
