The truth is that demand has been rising since 2020; it's up 8% since 2019 levels. But even when demand wasn't growing, we weren't deploying solar and wind fast enough. Declining hydro output didn't help (but, again, wasn't the main problem). /3

Data centers are the main source of growing US power demand in 2024 and 2025; but there's a lot of new US demand that is weather-related and/or that I can't pin down. We can and should be deploying #renewableenergy fast enough to meet this demand. /2

I'd been using Electric Power Monthly, adding total utility-scale generation + small scale solar + net imports to find gross power demand & comparing it to the previous year. 2024 figures of 4309 TWh + 84 TWh + 14 TWh resulted in 4406 TWh, an increase of 131 TWh from 2024. In 2025 it's 133 TWh. /2

Clearly wasn’t bc. solar, but low demand (gentle spring night) + 1.3 GW of #wind; inevitably #offshorewind from Vineyard and Revolution Wind? in the mix. On Saturday 10 AM gas was only 1.01 GW due to 6.8 GW behind-the-meter + utility-scale #solar output & day-ahead prices fell to $0.01 per MWh. /2

Fascinating developments on the #NewEngland grid. Now that both the Millstone and Seabrook nuke plants are fully back online, mid-day gas for power gen fell to .96 GW overnight at 3 AM Sunday morning. @gridstatus.io reports this is only the third time gas gen has fallen below 1 GW in >10 years. /1
