A new WIP! Naturally I’m going back to lotus! Here in Frederick, MD we had a waterlily and lotus nursery, Lilipons Water Gardens. It closed in 2025. I am ever so grateful for the opportunities to have photographed the gardens. These lotus & lily paintings are done with love & remembrance. #lotus

My painting desk with air filter on wall, tubes of oil paint sorted by color groups in clear cases and the chosen few laying on the desktop, brushes, palette, and last but not least a square canvas with a pink undercoating and the beginnings of a painting.

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci I saw her at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. She was in the center of the room surrounded by Da Vinci’s contemporaries on the walls. No one compared to him! Her skin was absolutely white but full of color! Just phenomenal!

“Tiger Lily’s Delight” (c) 2019 Watercolor on Ampersand Tiger Lily was the resident nursery cat. She came around for some attention while shopping for plantings. She had very good taste preferring azaleas to several other choices!

Smith Point Lighthouse painted white with its rusty base. The shade and waters are blue. Chesapeake bay lighthouses look like they’ve been sunk almost up to their tops! Smith Point is at the mouth of the Potomac River where the waters are rough as they mix.

Smith Point Lighthouse,u this time painted in detail and with varied colors. The white siding is yellow in the sunlight and the shadows are teal blue. The base is rusty and reflected in the waters. There are railings around the base of the house and the turret where the light is housed. A radio antenna is mounted up top. An outhouse is positioned over the water. Gulls are taking advantage of spots to roost.

A glass vase filled with large two toned Dalia’s in pink and yellow, along with smaller flowers in a blue accent color. The watercolor was applied loosely resulting in a soft and glowing arrangement of flowers with subtle details.

“Minnesott Beach Marina” (c) 2005 Watercolor on Arches paper Another marina stopover during an intercostal waterway cruise. This spot was tucked off the Neuse River in NC and had the feel of a quiet gunk hole. There were plans to renovate with timeshares, to “upgrade.” Captured before it was gone…

So I forgot to post an artwork for Wednesday! So here, to make up for it, is “Still Life with Green Pitcher” (c) 2018 Sold Watercolor on Arches paper I set up this still life inspired by a piece done in a class. My technique improved over the years. The inspiration piece is in comments.

A still life set up in front of a leaning mirror which makes the reflections angled. Included in the still life is a copper teapot, a red apple, and a green pitcher with a single tulip. They are all placed on a folded napkin edged with eyelets.
