Personally, I wouldn't treat it with anything. Do put a strip of 1/4 round around the outside. (Round side in) it will keep it from ghosting, give you a sharp edge and add a little structural stability.
Suggestion... screws in the top and bottom canvas holders make working with panels much easier. I built a smaller easel as well, that is basically a board with a few screws in it to hold smaller panels. 64 pieces... it would make your life much easier.
I'm not personally a fan of kde... my gnome install is tweaked so that it's pretty similar to windows. There's always cinnamon. I've not installed suse in years. I do know that the ubuntu install is really simple. You could always use nix... my son uses it on our server. Gnome...

I'm sort of new here, so by way of introduction, here's a fairly recent digital piece. This is done in inkscape and gimp on linux. It's called "Kaleidoscope Eyes" and derives a bit of inspiration from "Lucy in the Sky". #art
