AFT President. Teacher. Unionist. Fighting for a better life for children, families & communities through educ & eco opportunity, fairness & freedom & democracy Wife of Sharon Kleinbaum.
Public service workers don't give up their First Amendment rights when they choose to teach, care for, or serve their communities. This ruling is a victory for the Constitution, for free speech, and for every worker who refused to be silenced.
For decades, the US has been a hub for groundbreaking scientific and medical research. But the Trump administration’s attempts to politicize research funding and bring higher ed to heel are endangering that innovation & threatening all the progress we’ve made. (1/3)
Great news from New Jersey: 12 Peer Recovery Specialists at New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus won their union election and will be joining @hpae.bsky.social! Welcome to the @AFThealthcare.bsky.social family.
Voters across the country have rejected private school vouchers. Now, states can reject this federal voucher scheme and protect the public schools that serve 90% of America's students. Read the letter from @aft.org & @neatoday.bsky.social to Democratic governors: www.aft.org/press-releas...
This ruling reinforced what educators have always known: Public Service Loan Forgiveness is a promise made to public servants under the law, not something that should depend on politics. We fought for this win, and we’ll keep fighting for you.
How do we protect our democracy? By making sure every vote is counted. This election, help us protect the vote and become a poll worker in your community. Get more information & sign up here. #AFTvotes www.powerthepolls.org/aft
Congratulations to the Columbus Metropolitan Library workers on winning your union vote! Workers stood together to improve working conditions and better deliver what their communities expect from their local libraries, and now have won the voice on the job that they deserve. @oftunion.bsky.social
Happy Independence Day!🇺🇸 Despite the troubling times we're in, I still believe that we the people have the power to create an America where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Enjoy the 4th!
Literally no one is in DC this week- for the 250… here is a picture from the airport yesterday… it’s not just sparse crowds on the Mall www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...
This was a fight we were proud to lead–and we won’t stop fighting for our members, their families, and the communities we serve.
This week’s PSLF ruling is a huge win for public servants. It shows that imposing an ideological litmus test on millions of hard-working Americans and their employers is antithetical to our values and a violation of the first amendment.
Heat exhaustion & heat stroke can happen quickly, with little warning. And it is due to be HOT this weekend. Please make sure that you’re staying hydrated, resting in cool places, and keeping an eye on your loved ones. Here are some helpful tips. (1/2)
And I was glad to march with CBST, a congregation my wife led and is now emeritus and one that had helped me both have a Jewish and LGBTQ communal life. Happy Pride!
Today UFT, NYSUT and so many AFT members marched in Pride. As the first openly LGBTQ labor leader, I'm so proud of all the work we've done to support our LGBTQ members and students. Today is a day of celebration, of joy, of pride!
So great to do NYC’s gay pride with my home local, the @uft.org
This week's stories feature @aft.org's Summer Reading Cup in Washington, DC, a community celebration supporting students in Allentown, PA, and Peoria, IL students showcasing their video production skills at the SkillsUSA Conference. #PublicSchoolProud
Every student deserves the opportunity to discover new passions, build confidence and prepare for the future. That's what public schools do every day, and it's what this week's #PublicSchoolProud stories celebrate.
Unions make a real difference for educators and the students they serve. When educators have a voice on the job, they win better pay, better working conditions and stronger schools for their students & communities. That's the union difference!
I enjoyed talking to the Backtalkers Academy this week about the moment our country is in & the fight for our freedoms. As we face an all-out assault on our multiracial democracy, we must be the enforcer of our rights—& that starts with community, solidarity, and developing the muscle of resistance
For many of us, our dads & father figures are some of our first teachers! This Father’s Day, we’re showing our appreciation for all of the biological, adoptive, step, and chosen parents for guiding us through life & helping us grow. Thanks for all you do.
So proud of my @AFT.org family! Congratulations to AFT EVP Evelyn DeJesus & @nyspef.bsky.social President Wayne Spence on their well-deserved awards at the NAACP New York Branch Freedom Fund Gala. Thank you for all that you do to advance civil rights & create opportunities for a better life for all.
Then I had some time with @ginafortexas.bsky.social, a real champion for students, educators & families, to talk about the future of public ed in TX, ways to make life more affordable for all Texans, and how we can put the ideas in our "Devices Down, Eyes Up, Hands-On" 10-point plan into practice.
At a moment when fear is being used to divide communities, we must stand together to protect public schools & defend the right to learn. This theme carried into my conversation with @lulacorg.bsky.social CEO Juan Proaño about my book & the role educators play in strengthening democracy & community.
During the Women’s Hall of Fame Luncheon, I talked about the attacks on public education, the rights of families & why every child deserves the opportunity to learn & thrive.
