We provide 8 policy recommendations: from protecting critical migratory nodes and restoring breeding habitat to assessing wind-farm impacts. For migratory species, protecting one place is rarely enough. We need to protect the network of places connecting an entire life cycle. 2/3
What can 20+ years of GPS tracking teach us about saving Eurasian Curlews? A lot! Tracking data from 626 curlews across Europe revealed remarkably strong fidelity to breeding & wintering sites, critical life stages, and key places & pressures affecting survival. 👉 doi.org/10.1016/j.bi... 1/3
Are protected areas able to safeguard island-endemic charadriiforms? A new study found that species in protected areas were more likely to be declining. Do protected areas target the most threatened species, or are protected areas alone not enough? 👉 doi.org/10.25225/jvb... #JVertBiol #ornithology
🐦 A new paper out! GPS tracking of 85 Common Redshanks revealed how breeding phenology and habitat use vary across the species' breeding range, highlighting the value of protected grasslands, AES and tailored conservation. 👉 doi.org/10.1016/j.ge... #ornithology #waders #shorebirds #HABITRACK
Most scientists learn peer review by trial and error. Check out this practical guide for both first-time and experienced reviewers. It covers the entire review process, with useful tips and common pitfalls. 👉 doi.org/10.25225/jvb... #JVertBiol #PeerReview #PhDChat @fishecoevo.bsky.social

Sadly, the remains of M0 were found there on 16 Feb 2026 (likely taken by a domestic 😼). Still, the record is very valuable: it shows that some Black Redstarts wintering in Czechia can move hundreds of km within the same winter. 👀 If you see a colour-ringed bird, please report it! 🙏
One bird, L5, was seen again at the same place on 20 Feb 2026. But M0 seemed to have vanished completely — until an unexpected report arrived from Austria! The bird had travelled 382 km southwest of Brno to the Alpine village of Iselsberg (East Tyrol). 🧵👇
A winter journey from Brno to the Alps 🐦⛰️ On 2 Dec 2025, we colour-ringed two young Black Redstarts at a brownfield site in Brno (Czechia): L5 and M0. Both birds disappeared soon afterwards. Then something unexpected happened… 🧵👇 #birdringing #blackredstart #BrnoRedstarts

What an epic return! 🤩🌍🐦 A common snipe tagged in April 2025 near Olomouc is back in Czechia after migrating to the Yamalo-Nenets AO (east of the Urals) – a round trip of over 7,500 km! #HABITRACK #ornithology #birdmigration #snipe
However, private allelic richness declined slightly with latitude, showing that even with high dispersal, some genetic footprint remains. Combining all evidence revealed the expansion origin in the SW of the range. 4/6
There was no drop in nucleotide diversity or allelic richness across the expansion front and almost no founder effect signals. This suggests that high dispersal capacity buffered against the usual genetic costs. 3/6
Here, we combined historical observations on first occurrences, ring recovery data and genomic analyses spanning the European breeding range to map the expansion and to test its genetic consequences. 2/6
Our new study in Molecular Ecology doi.org/10.1111/mec.... explores the northward expansion of the Eurasian #reedwarbler. Despite a fast range shift, genetic diversity wasn't lost and only weak founder effect signs were found. Let’s break it down: 🧵👇 1/6 #ornithology

This winter we newly ringed 44 Black Redstarts and resighted/retrapped 14 from previous winters. Just a casual winter monitoring project in Brno, but one that is truly close to my heart! ❤️ The aim is to study survival, within-winter movements and where the birds breed. | #BrnoRedstart #BlackRedstart
