Knock knock.

The sound comes from the bay window, as if Daisy's premonition has come true. I overturn the hammock in surprise, landing on my hands and knees. But it's only Ski at the window, his hands pressed against the glass, veins of frost spreading from them. He smiles at me as he peers inside.

"Ski!" Laughing, I leap to my feet and RUSH right past Daisy to the window. His hands dwarf mine as I match my palms to his to melt the frost, making funny faces at him through the glass.

I can't hear him, but he laughs. "Come out," he mouths.

"Your parents will be here.."

I stop Daisy's censure before she can make it. "Not for forever. Suddenly, I'm feeling totally okay with them seeing my room in its current state. "Come on, let's stretch our legs."

"He's a Winter. He's on his prince's side. You can't trust him."

"Nah, it's Ski. He rescued you, remember?" I'm already out the door, and she heaves the biggest sigh ever but stays on my heels, ever vigilant.

They up their frenzied attack, and Joy sinks down, covering her face.

"Joy!" Ren screams, and I can’t stand any more. I run at the pieces of track and kick one aside. The pixnies let out a dog-whistle of a screech and immediately launch themselves at Ren and me.

I leap at Ren, cover his body with mine, and pull him to the ground. Damn it, why didn’t I bring down the other protection necklaces I made for me and maybe even Ren to wear? Obviously, because I thought the circle would save us. Smart, Blake.

A buzz rushes over us, and after it passes, I think I’ve succeeded in saving the two of us. But, no, suddenly my back and neck are assaulted with sharp pinpricks of pain. It’s not so bad.

Not until my back is suddenly aflame.

I scream out and clutch at Ren, burying my face into his shoulder. The pain of my blistered hand is nothing compared to that seeping though my back, working its way towards my core. I’m pretty sure that Ren is calling my name, but I can’t hear him over the roar in my ears.

"If he ATTACKS, I have the right to defend myself and to send soldiers to Summer. Once he's out of the picture, you'll become Mother Nature, and I'll mold Nivis for the position of queen." He sneers. "You can't handle ruling Winter, not with that broken heart of yours."

Ray's eyes snap to mine, wide with recognition, no matter which definition of "broken heart" he assumes my father meant. But I can hear it in his voice. He meant both. He knows.

He knows.

How long? Did he know during all those years I pretended to be the perfect son, all the years I pretended to be involved with Noelle for his sake? Did he know when he sent me to use my "friendship" with Ray to manipulate him?

My horror at finding out that my father knows exactly where my heart lies is nothing compared to that when he unsheathes his sword. Ray's eyes are on me, so he doesn't see.

"No, wait!" I yell, but Father holds up a hand and surrounds me with a prison of ice, clear as glass so I can watch his victory.

That's a great feeling to reach. It's easy to get lost in worldbuilding, but knowing when a chapter serves the story is a huge win.
Congratulations on moving forward! Out of curiosity, are you doing all the editing yourself, or have you considered working with an editor for a fresh perspective?

That's always such a satisfying feeling. There comes a point where you just have to trust the work and let yourself move on. Once you've got a few more chapters under your belt, are you thinking of bringing an editor into the process, or are you planning to keep revising on your own for now?

My eyes bore into Nico's eye sockets, willing him to KEEP from looking at his hands like he's been doing half the day already. This is not your fault. It's. Not. Your. Fault.

The only good thing about his skeleton form is that it's expressionless. Nobody can see the guilt on his face that I know is there. Nobody can see the fear and horror I know he's feeling at the mere accusation. Nico is the most tenderhearted person I know. He must be dying inside.

His words cut me, sharper than his sword will, but I don't give in. I want to wound him back, just once. “[These words are cutting, but spoilery]”

“[And you shall never know the comeback]” If his eyes could glow red with fury, they would now, and he presses harder against me. It's too early, but my strength's failing. His sword's nearly touching my nose. This isn't enough time, but what does it matter? I know my fate here. I let out a shuddering breath and use the wall to hold me steady, knowing he's about to cleave me in half. I ready my plea to Evie.

Past him, on the screen, Evie picks up the paper Danny dropped, and her eyes fall on it momentarily, showing me the entirety of the script he was supposed to translate. The last words strike a match in my heart.

I will come for you.

It's impossible, but for one shining moment, I believe that she believes it: my Evie plans to come for me.

I let out a guttural cry that's been building in me for months and shove my sword forward, knocking [BigBad] to the ground. I swing the weapon at him from above, and he gets his up in time to block it, so I swing again and again. The look of terror on his face as he's sprawling on the ground, barely managing to block my blows, fuels me further.

"What?" I say, realizing he said something.

He hops from the PLATFORM into the cockpit of his fighter. "Good luck," I say, my voice weak against the roar of his engines.

Uh, yeah, this isn't a great place to stand as the shooters all get ready to leave. Even though they all navigate out tubes, and the launch bay's rarely exposed to space outside, the thought of being here when those tubes open makes me dizzy. I scramble away from Max's tube and towards the door that leads back into the main ship.

Before I get there, Captain Kiffe stops me. Right. She was inspecting the fighters...

"Get into one of those Lasers, Youth."

"The Lasers? Me?" My voice squeaks, proving that Youth is a pretty good name for me. "I...I..." I can't think. All I know is I can't get into one of those fighters, a clear dome the only thing between me and eternity, one wrong button away from spacing myself. I can't be surrounded by all those stars.

He shakes his head, no comprehension in his face, so I put his hand on top of my chest.

"I'm not... I'm never going to be the one who says the right thing. So just feel it here." My heart is pounding under his hand, just as loud and hard as it was in Justyn's world. "Just trust this here. Trust me. Trust this."

It doesn't matter that he might not return the feelings, that I might be screwing everything up, that even if he wants this, it could alter everything about our friendship that I love. The feeling I had when I returned from Justyn's world clarified everything for me. I would be an idiot to be so afraid of rejection that I didn't grab a hold of this clarity when I have the chance. And this, here, is the chance.

"Can I.." I start, and find myself fumbling. "Can we..."

"Please?" he whispers.

I take his face in my hands and kiss him. I drink in all that WARMTH and love he gives me, and I reflect it back in the kiss. His fingers clutch at my shirt, and this time he's kissing me back, even as tears fall down his cheeks and against my cheeks and fingers.
