My clothing history class helped me realize how much I’ve always appreciated the medieval era and the history I learn about it. I thought this book was fun. It takes a wide view that incorporates more recent understanding of this misunderstood period.

Enjoyably thought provoking. “The meritocratic ideal is not a remedy for inequality, it is a justification of inequality.” BTW this book made me realize the meaning of “just deserts” has been flying over my head my whole life. 🧁🤔😂 (see photo for my philosophical take)

I’ve always taken issue with the word “deserve.” Deserving is one of those human concepts that means nothing except what we decide it means. And no one ever deserves anything except what humans think they deserve. So for me the entire basis of merit is flawed from the start.
This book was a fascinating read with lots of insight on political, academic and cultural dynamics. But I was waiting for something that never came. Why do we humans force ourselves and everyone on earth to submit to competition among each other for our comfort and safety, let alone our very survival? We’ve all been born with no say in our existence. And then we turn our existence into a game where there are winners and losers, so earth becomes a glorified work camp that cannot be opted out of except by the most extreme measures.
This book asks what became of the common good. I wonder if one could find a time in history when that concept has actually manifested. Humans could decide to uphold the common good if we wanted to. We could choose to base our mutual existence on cooperation, and let competition happen in arenas beyond the common good. We could decide that all people deserve to live with their basic needs met and make competing in the game of life optional instead of mandatory. We do all of this to ourselves, but we could choose to do differently.

This is one of those books I think everyone should read. Yes Mr Harari has his own biases, but that doesn’t detract from how plausible his warnings are. And he admits that some of the points are a little extreme, but being cautious in this context is vital.
