Model predictions (#ECMWF data provided by @cambecc.nullschool.net ) suggest #smoke will reach northern Greenland and later almost to the #northpole (images are the next 4 days forecast of smoke) 2/2
🛰️🔥 #wildfires in northern #Canada are producing a lot of #smoke. Notably in this case #winds are carrying the smoke. This is the right setting for intercontinental smoke transport via the #Arctic region. In fact .... 1/2
🧪🛰️ Now continental #smoke and #dust clouds over the western northern hemisphere. There are major impacts in both Europe and N. America: #AirQuality and #PublichHealth Because they block and absorb sunlight so much, it does impact clouds by changing energy distributivo in the atmosphere.
process the image through algorithms that derive the concentration of smoke . The parameters shown is the Aerosol Optical Depth and it is a proxy for the total columnar concentration. For reference a value of >0.2-0.3 is already polluted and the image shows values at 1 or above. 2/2
🛰️ Today's image from the GOES satellite illustrates the extent and thickness of the #smoke cloud hanging on top of much eastern US. The image highlights the scale and qualitatively indicates there is a lot of it but if quantifying how much is out there one has to .... 1/2

But today's image is more informational. AODs values are higher for the clean S Atlantic air (but these are low if compared w/NE Atlantic). Very notable how far it reached. Dust could potentially influence marine biology. Also it would certainly deposit over the glaciers of S Georgia Is
Yesterday's values of Aerosol Optical Depth (a proxy for dust concentration) report a generally clean region (note background values are removed). AOD values over the dust cloud are missing (no space to explain why here) , so in this case the actual amount emitted is underestimated from space 3/n
Yesterday's CHL from PACE shows a fairly typical distribution. Note the high levels of CHL just offshore of S. Georgia Island and Argentine sea shelfbreak. 2/n
🛰️🌊🌍💨 yesterday's #highlatitudedust event Patagonia had a long reach, with a typical setting of a polar low transiting over the Drake passage, it drag a significant amount of dust into the SW Atlantic. 1/n
🛰️🌬️ #highlatitudedust activity today in central Patagonia. Webcam show a thick dust cloud just north of Comodoro Rivadavia. Dust cloud begins to advance into the SW Atlantic (potentially it can reach Antarctica depending weather) . Source is at the dry bed of former lake Colhué Huapi.
