When I first came to IPA, it seemed like such a revelation to be able to notate things that I heard. However, as time has gone on, IPA has seemed less and less precise. There are huge spaces of vowel sounds in between the IPA vowels, and a huge variety of e.g. ɛ or ʌ sounds.
