So here's the thing - Nats are trying to play both sides and keep votes/power by calling Winston's comments racist, while being willing to work with him still. The problem with that is that voters who don't like the racism, also won't like people who don't take a stand against it. #nzpols

If there's one thing I do want politicians of all stripes to do, it's to listen - to to respond, but to understand. To acknowledge that there are different views and try and find a respectful way to lead our country. This 👇 is disappointing. Not just the action, but to gloat about it.

Weather-related claims skyrocketed in the past 12 months, highlighting the volatile nature of New Zealand’s weather, an expert says.

New Zealand’s largest insurer, IAG, says weather-related claims rose 256% after the country was battered by 46 storms.

New data from IAG New Zealand’s Wild Weather Tracker revealed its insurance brands received 33,174 claims from 46 storms between March 2025 and February 2026, up from 9324 claims over 29 storms in the previous 12-month period.

Storm-related claims covered home, contents, motor, commercial and boat policies across IAG New Zealand’s insurance companies, which include AMI, State and NZI.

Phil Gibson, chief executive of AMI, State and NZI, said storms were arriving more often and with greater intensity.

“Over a 15-year timeline, a storm typically affected parts of the country once every 19 days. In the last 12 months, that frequency has more than doubled to once every eight days, making storms a near-weekly occurrence.”

An AMI, State and NZI Climate Change Poll last year found 90% of New Zealanders surveyed expect more frequent and extreme storms.

More than 75% said they wanted investment in risk reduction, mitigation and resilience.

“If we want to keep people protected, councils, government and insurers must work together to address the underlying risks,” Gibson said. “It simply requires making risk reduction a priority and collective, timely and co-ordinated action from all of us.

“Reducing natural hazard risk is the fairest and most durable way to keep insurance affordable and available to as many New Zealanders as possible.”

A group of around 80-100 people are sitting and standing in full sun on the steps of a beautiful wharenui at Ōnuku Marae. The sun us out, the sky is blue and we're all smiling. I'm sitting in the middle in a green and white dress.

I spent today at Ōnuku Marae on Te Pataka o Rakaihautū Banks Peninsula at a nature symposium. Ōnuku have a 200 year vision to restore the Harbour and today we heard about the extensive mahi in mapping and understanding the seabed and partnering to farm kelp for harvest and restore biodiversity. 🐟🐬🪼🐚

A foraging expedition to the red-zone this afternoon and I see crumble in my future 😋 Thanks to @ashleykiwi.bsky.social for the apple tree location. The feijoas were just beside the City to Sea pathway near Stanmore Rd (I think).

GasNZ reassures customers that “gas decline” stories are not about LPG supply
Despite the diminishing supplies of natural gas in New Zealand, there is no shortage of LPG, GasNZ
says.
Chief executive Jeffrey Clarke says most of the news about declining ‘gas’ production in New Zealand
is actually about ‘natural gas’, and is not relevant to ‘LPG gas’ users.
“LPG supplies are not declining like natural gas is,” he says. There are 300,000 customers of LPG in
New Zealand – including all South Island ‘gas’ consumers – who don’t have to worry about the
decline in natural gas affecting them.
People sometimes ask how they can be sure whether their gas is LPG or natural gas, Clarke says.
“It’s pretty simple - if your gas comes in a cylinder or tank, then it is LPG.
“If you are a South Islander, then your gas is LPG – because there is no natural gas supply in the
South Island.
“And if your gas is piped to your home or business in the North Island, then it is probably natural
gas.”
Clarke says that if you are in any doubt, just check with your retailer.
And that despite the war in the Middle East – LPG suppliers in New Zealand say that they have plenty
of stock, he says.
“Most of New Zealand’s LPG comes from Australia and USA, with some produced here domestically.
“None of the LPG New Zealand imports is shipped through the Middle East.”

I have written to the Chair of the Governance and Administration Select Committee requesting that we hold an urgent inquiry on the capability and capacity of FENZ.

Yesterday I attended the firefighters' strike in Central Auckland with Chlöe Swarbrick and spent some time at their fire station. Firefighters there share concerns raised across the country.

In the short time I've been the spokesperson for Internal Affairs for the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand, it has become very obvious that there are serious issues that need immediate attention within Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

The debacle around purchasing new appliances is unacceptable and is putting communities at risk. The lack of appropriate training facilities, the excess amounts of overtime worked and low base pay rates are all issues.

Add to this fire stations closed due to lack of maintenance which has pushed people and property outside of FENZ standard response times, and the numbers of career firefighters remaining static as our population has increased. They face an increased risk of cancer and a battle to prove it's work related, and volunteer firefighters are not getting ACC cover. The list goes on!

At the same time, I have become extremely concerned with the conflicting information that senior FENZ officers have been giving at hearings to the Governance and Administration Select Committee. Information that is frequently found to be incorrect.

Just added to my emergency/resilience kit with a small solar panel for my phone/torch/speaker/powerbank etc. Trialing it now and in bright sun phone has gone from completely flat to 13% in around 45min. It's foldable and 36 x 24cm when open. On sale at Torpedo 7 closing sale for $119.
