Woke up to sounds of beeping this morning. Came through to the living room to discover I hadn't fully covered Milly's cage with her blackout blanket, and she was sitting in this one little corner waiting for me to come say hello.

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Missing clues: the clues for the three killer cages and six little killer arrows are missing from the grid! Each can be filled in using one of the two-digit numbers to the left of the puzzle (the digit 2 by one of the question marks indicates ‘squared’). Each should be used once.

Red letters: colour nine cells in the grid red. No two red cells can appear in the same column, row, or three-by-three box; nor can they contain the same digit.

A digit in a red cell is about to celebrate its birthday; therefore, its value is one higher than the digit. (The value of a non-red cell is equal to its digit.)

All the following clues apply to values, not digits (so be careful of your assumptions!):

Killer cages: the sum of values in the cage equals the cage’s clue.

Little killer arrows: the sum of values along the indicated diagonal equals the arrow’s clue.

Arrows: the value of the circled cell equals the sum of the values along its arrow.

Circles: A circled cell has a value of at least seven (this does not apply to the circle of an arrow clue).

I think about this passage every so often. Partly for the usual reasons seeing past predictions of the present is interesting, but partly for the phrasing. The sentiment is "what if: video games?" but for someone who's never conceived of the concept before.

I love this photo of me so much. Seeing it gave me the feeling, far stronger than ever before, that I could see 'her' in there. And this is after a very short time and relatively few steps taken to change my appearance. I still have lots more I can do!

As for “Write what you know,” I was regularly told this as a beginner. I think it’s a very good rule and have always obeyed it. I write about imaginary countries, alien societies on other planets, dragons, wizards, the Napa Valley in 22002. I know these things. I know them better than anybody else possibly could, so it’s my duty to testify about them. I got my knowledge of them, as I got whatever knowledge I have of the hearts and minds of human beings, through imagination working on observation. Like any other novelist. All this rule needs is a good definition of “know.”
