FINALLY got around to finishing this after not really being in a reading headspace. Overall I greatly enjoyed it, a great sequel that nicely ties things up. Good tension with the two villains, and I enjoy that the characters aren't perfect. #booksky #bookreview #queerlit #mlm

"Somewhere Beyond the Sea" by TJ Klune

Like “House on the Cerulean Sea” the sequel is witty, light-hearted, but still touches on heavy topics. The JKR villain was very on the nose, and I was very entertained the whole time.

The children, like the previous book, were the highlight of the story. They were not as heavily featured, but were still very prominent. While Linus and the children were very important to the story, Arthur was the main character this time.

In this book, Arthur had to further confront his trauma, and realize that the lessons he imparted on his children and Linus, he needed to take to heart as well. We also see growth in Lucy, who while still very much the devil child, care deeply for his family.

Overall, the story was a great read. It maintained that dry humor I enjoyed from the first book, an almost Lemony Snicket-esque style, but with Klune’s own flair. While there are heavy topics, Klune does an amazing job telling a story of not only found family, but community.

My dad wanted to drive around for Father's Day. We wound up going to Mt Mitchell, but didn't go to the top. None of us were really dressed for a hike, but I still got some good pictures. The drive up was beautiful.

Overall this book was... fine. Definitely not my genre, but I read it for a book club and its a short read, so I powered through it. There was some interesting parts, and I will say this is definitely a very atmospheric book. However, for such a short book, it took WAY too long to get to the actual story. I was about halfway through it before anything I'd consider qualifying for horror even happened.

The setting itself was interesting, and I'm not one to be interested in something like mountain climbing. I knew there were often guides on these sort of expeditions, but was interesting to learn the dynamic. The 30s Englishman racism was also on point, which the author pointed out in her acknowledgements was purposefully done to fit the time period. Overall, the book was just fine, not bad, but not good either.

A better feature of the retextures of Neve and Harding. I loved the black/teal/gold color scheme for Neve and the blue/orange fits Harding well.

I am using a ReShade mod that made the game appear a lot less purple. It looks good but my ONE gripe is for some reason red's seem to REALLY stick out with this mod.

Indeed is wild these days. In what world is 10 an hour "Competitive Compensation" you could give me unlimited PTO and free Health insurance and 10 an hour wouldn't do shit. Not something I'm interested in at all, I just saw the posting and rolled my eyes so hard seeing that $10 an hour.

The story was cute. I enjoyed Rowan as a character and Jimson was a fun love interest. I always love, as a chubby gay men, having a chubby male love interest.

The magic system with alchemy is fun, especially with how separate the different schools of alchemy are, but comes together. I am always a slut for forest spirits, so I did enjoy that.

The author mentioned the book being originally more episodic before being written together. There were some time skips that were disjointed, and it was difficult to track exactly how much time passed.

I did have some issue with the pacing and character development. Calder I think should've cooked longer on his redemption. Rowan was a bit generic protagonist. Jimson was fun backwood lumberjack boyfriend. Marley and Elara kinda overlapped a lot and didn't have super distinct personalities.

Overall, I did enjoy this book but it wasn't the best read ever, so hence the 3 stars for me. Middle of the road, good, had some good concepts, but some of the writing left something to be desired.

Despite being a longer read, it did not feel that way. The pacing was good (for most of the book), lots of little twists and turns. Some of the science explanations was a bit much would be one of my critiques. I also was not a huge fan of the pacing of the end. This I felt like was very off, a lot happened in the very end of the book.

However, I overall loved it. I loved the story being told in the lens of him regaining his memory.

I also loved how they worked through language barriers. The concept of an alien species that “sees” through echo-location and also being basically giant spider rocks is very fun.

The book was fun, I enjoyed it. It was classic nerdy Sci-Fi. Again my two critiques were:

1) The over-explanation of the science behind the technology and the alien biology.
2) The pacing towards the end.

I overall enjoyed this and would recommend it to fellow Sci-Fi lovers.
