Chris Trottier (gameplay designer): I needed to have a stress level that was appropriate. [...] Will, once a train is runaway, he'll just kind of shrug and be like, I'm sure it'll be fine. [But] that was not a good fit for my life at that time, so I did not see the last year of Spore.

Jenna Chalmers (gameplay designer): Will got distracted, as he usually does near the end of a project in general, let alone his specific distractions for this project. He is more new idea and big vision. So once you're down in the weeds, tightening all the little nuts and bolts, that's not the part that's interesting to him.

Will Wright (chief designer): I got a divorce. I was distracted by that, for sure.

Guillaume Pierre (gameplay producer): Will disappeared for the last year of the game. […] He got a new girlfriend, and he would spend more time with his new girlfriend than time in the office. He would come in once every few weeks and play the game a little bit, and then disappear again.

But there is a drawback to these collaborations. Arguably the most beautiful piece in the show is made not by Bove, but instead by Richard Berger: “My Couch” (1976). It’s an evanescent concoction of thousands of silver beads arranged in such a way as to just barely visibly outline a sofa. As I approached, the beads shuddered in the air moved by my body, making the work appear even more gossamer than it seemed from several feet away. Such delicate grace feels like a benediction.

America has always been an unattainable dream, a place to dream about. It is an imperfect state. As a child 1 remember the America I imagined, that I constructed from different sources. That particular America was full of lights. Of shiny reflections, of mirages. Paradise.
The America that I now know is still a place of light, a place of opportunities, of risks, of justice, of racism, of injustice, of hunger and excess, of pleasure and growth.
Democracy is a constant job, a collective dedication.
My sculpture "Untitled" (America) comes with no instructions. It can be installed any way someone might want. I relinquish control, as with most of my work. It's useful, practical: just a set of lightstrings, like the ones we see at so many fairs and celebrations, or just hanging in a small street somewhere, full of sad possibilities of a party no one came to.
And like most of my work, and just like myself, the work is ephemeral. It doesn't really exist, but hopefully will light some peoples' spaces, at least for a short time.
The instructions, or lack of them, guarantees that once I am no longer here this work will still be alive, in constant change, in different configurations. As in a dream, taking almost no space,

I sat for the full 40 minutes of this three-channel film essay by Liu Chuang, “Bitcoin Mining and Field Recordings of Ethnic Minorities.” I rarely do that in an art museum but it really grabbed me. Incredibly beautiful work

This three-channel video work investigates the recent activities of crypto mining near hydroelectric plants in China and their impact on the Zomia region, which spans vast areas in Southwest China and Southeast Asia. Narrated in Muya language and southern Chinese dialects, this essay film interweaves archival images, oral histories, drone footage, and film clips, and underlines the entangled histories between the Bitcoin miners and Zomia inhabitants. It speculates on the cyclical nature of human civilisation in the face of technological, cultural, and sociopolitical change.
