What’s less clear is why — given artists come from a constellation of different countries, cities, towns and villages — the programme always skews more Sheffield than anywhere else.

On the face of it, there’s a simple explanation for this invasion. Every year since 1955, the first week of August means it’s time for the Sidmouth Folk Festival, when hundreds of musicians descend on the town’s gardens, churches, halls and any space left over to do what they do best.

Hesketh never responds to our request for comment, but deputy John Booker says he “totally refutes” the accusations before declining to “throw more fuel on the fire” by responding to the complaints. Shortly before hanging up, he makes one more thing clear: “I have never been involved in any coup.”

What caused this upset? According to those present, it was the arrival the party's leader, Councillor John Hesketh. A seething Facebook post says Hesketh “brought a wrecking ball” to the meeting. Another person present says that, in his view, Hesketh “deliberately went in there to cause havoc”.

BREAKING: The Sheffield Green Party’s Andy Davies has resigned as councillor for Walkley. Davies won the ward from former Sheffield Labour leader Tom Hunt in May by just 73 votes. On Facebook earlier today, Davies said he was stepping down due to his “mental health and associated personal reasons”

If we all stick together, we will have the power to challenge issues we collectively feel strongly about once again,” artists wrote in an email, reiterating the crucial message in bold: Don’t sign.

In early May, an email shows some alterations to the new leases were agreed, particularly around how and when the charity would be able to evict artists. However, YAS director Georgina Kettlewell wrote, the charity was unwilling to give up the right to issue no-fault evictions altogether.

But far more concerning was the fact that the new leases made clear YAS could evict artists even if they hadn’t broken their contract, a radical shift from how the charity had operated previously.

Artists were not particularly happy about this development. Nor were they pleased to learn that a large property company, Eddisons, would start managing the building on the charity’s behalf, applying a service charge that had yet to be finalised.

The trouble began last year, when Miranda Plowden, chair of YAS’ board of trustees, sent an email explaining that rent was going up, although she reassured artists they would still pay “below market rent”.

“It’s such a waste to take something so innovative, so special and so unique — and destroy it,” says artist Brett Payne. At least from the outside, YAS certainly doesn’t look destroyed. But within the city’s tight-knit artistic community, whispers have been circulating.
