Every version Simon plays brings forth images of the Angel who pulled him from the wreckage of the SM-13. Haloed in lab lights Simon mistook for sunlight, Ryland had waited for him to wake up aboard the Hail Mary, and he probably had no idea that Simon had fallen in love with him instantly. He probably still had no idea, to be fair, as Simon wouldn’t even know how to begin that conversation. “Thank you for not giving up on me, even though it would have been easier to leave me for dead. By the way, you’re beautiful and I think you’re an Angel sent to me by God.”

Yeah, he couldn’t do that. He also couldn’t tell Ryland that Erid’s star was the first sunlight he’d ever seen. In a roundabout way, the scientist must know because Simon has told him of the history of Eden and the Coalition of Iron—how he ended up in the SM-13 and the events of the Quiet Rapture. Grace knows, but Simon doesn’t know if he understands. Erid’s star was the first living starlight Simon ever felt on his skin, and something in him felt strongly that Ryland might cry if he knew that.

Clark pushes himself up onto his hands and knees, limbs shaking as he forces himself slowly to his feet. Bruce can see the gears turning in his head as he takes note of what the caped crusader just said. "That's a red dwarf star."

"It is." Bruce doesn't think it wise to panic, but he's certainly not at ease. He knows Clark probably can't hear his heartbeat like on Earth, but he isn't sure he'll need to with how hard it's pounding.

Had he been shown this scene merely a week ago, Clark would have thought it to be some strange parallel universe where he and Bruce had their personalities swapped. But today, this is his reality. Probably tomorrow, too.

Bruce procures some of the crab jerky he made from his belt and passes it to Clark, who accepts it in silence. It’s an unpleasant texture—akin to the feeling of burnt rubber on one’s teeth, which Clark is unfortunately familiar with—but it tastes fine. While Clark gnaws on it like a rawhide bone, Bruce chews his own with all the elegance of a man raised in high society. He even manages to keep his mouth closed, which Clark is quietly astonished by.

This is a position Clark is beginning to get tired of finding himself in—the two of them sitting in silence, eating what little they could find and trying desperately to figure out a way off this damned planet without actually communicating. It was getting them nowhere, despite their path forward and their plan to get a signal out.

Maybe they succeed—maybe everything works out the way it’s supposed to and they get rescued—but that doesn’t change the fact that Clark’s eyes have been opened. He knows nothing of the human experience. The emotions, that’s ironically the easy part. Right now, he knows he feels exhausted and angry and hurt every time he looks across the fire at Bruce. What he can’t grapple with is the physical.

Clark’s in pain, and not just because his ankle is still dully throbbing. His feet hurt from walking, his back aches from sleeping on dirt, his head pounds the longer he’s in the sunlight. Every few hours his stomach will cramp with hunger, or his throat will go dry and mucusy with thirst. Without his powers—his immunities and his invulnerabilities—Clark is just a man. And, as he’s quickly realizing, not a man built for survival situations.

Bruce, though…

Bruce has done nothing but keep them alive this entire time while Clark navigates things like needing food or rolling his ankle. Bruce hunted animals like it was nothing. He retrieved them water and fought off snakes and built them fires. He took longer watches at night to let Clark rest, even though he’d never admit to it. Granted, he had his utility belt, but that had very little to do with his raw knowledge of the universe and its many strange atmospheric anomalies that somehow foster life.

Bruce Wayne was nothing if not a surprise at every turn, and Clark felt utterly inadequate beside him right now.

Clark sways on his feet, hand still clutching the bleeding wound on his head. He looks toward Bruce, who is already watching him, and he tries to straighten himself out. “My powers—”

“I know,” Bruce interrupts, maybe too quickly. “It’s fine, we’ll figure this out.”

Clark pulls his communicator from his belt and tries to send out a distress call to the League. After a moment, the device beeps and powers down with a final warning message.

Severe Weather Interference Detected

“What the hell?” Superman murmurs, brows furrowing as he tries to flick the device’s power off and back on.

“That could have something to do with it,” Bruce offers, pointing above their heads. Deep up in the atmosphere, cloud cells clump and swirl in nebulous conglomerates that strobe with lightning every few seconds. “Electrical storm. No frequencies in or out.”

“Great,” Clark huffs. “What are we supposed to do?”

“Find a way to contact the others,” Bruce says flatly as he begins walking toward the foot of a small mountain range in the distance. “But first, we need to assess our environment. Come on.”

“Bruce?” Clark prompts, switching to Batman’s real name. Normally, they’d never do such a thing in costume, but seeing as there is quite literally no one around, Bruce doesn’t comment on it.

“Hnn.” Is all he says in reply. An implied ‘go ahead.’

“How did you know where we landed so fast?” Clark asks. He sounds suspicious, but there’s that underlying air of trust that Bruce is always loath to shatter with his hard truths.

“I designed the device Faust used,” he says without hesitation. No use lying about it now, he supposes. “It was—”

“Another one of your contingencies.” Clark sounds angry, and Bruce acknowledges that he has every right to be. He stops walking and turns to his friend.

“It was never intended to be used,” Batman says, arms crossed securely in front of him. “I designed it years ago, before we reverse engineered red sun radiation on Earth. I thought the plans had been destroyed, but it seems Savage had one more trick up his sleeve.”

“Vandal Savage?” Clark asks. “What, you think Faust got the device from him?”

“It’s the best explanation I can discern,” Bruce says gruffly, turning to continue walking. “A copy of the blueprints must have still been saved to the bat-computer’s harddrive. It’s possible he executed them and then sold or traded the gun to Faust.”

“So did you bother to make sure I could breathe here, or was this just luck?” Clark asks after another long few moments of silence. It startles Bruce, how bitter he sounds.

“Jesus, Clark,” he says, shaking his head in disbelief as he continues on without faltering.

“Just curious,” the other man says flatly. “Not every day you find out your best friend designed a device meant to strand you on a planet with no powers and no means of contacting anyone.”

Bruce turns on his heel now to look at Clark. “I already told you, it was never supposed to be made,” he asserts forcefully. “And it wasn’t supposed to be this planet.”

“What do you mean?” Superman asks, brows furrowed in suspicious confusion.

“I mean I purposefully ruled HR 95735 out because of its stratospheric electrical storms,” Bruce says. “It was supposed to be Gliese 411, so I could still reach you.”

So you would still be safe, is what he doesn’t say. Although, Clark still looks a bit like he’s been hit in the chest by the other man’s actual choice of words. He’s never been particularly good at hiding his emotions, as Bruce learned very quickly.

Batman sighs, pinching between his eyebrows over the cowl. “I told you, it was just a contingency. It was never meant to hurt you.”

WIP of a jaycest fic:

Jayce lets Talis’s leg drape uselessly on his shoulder so he can let go and take hold of the younger man’s hands. He guides them down, encouraging him to grab his ass, which Talis does readily and with brute force. Fingerprint bruises bloom under the strength of his hold, reminding Jayce that they are still very much evenly matched in everything and this competition in his head is probably ridiculous and childish. He doesn’t care, though. He craves the little tilt his Viktor gives in approval every time he does something better than Talis. He couldn’t care less about Talis’s Viktor, though. Besides, he seems to only have eyes for Talis, anyway.

Typical that Talis’s Viktor would treat him like he has nothing to prove. Like he is everything he needs to be just by experiencing pleasure. Murmured “Good boy”s and hushed “Do that again”s tumble from the smaller man’s mouth every now and then, invoking an almost-Pavlovian response in both men on the bed, but Jayce knows better. Those aren’t for him. The Machine Herald is not so rewarding—not so easily enthused. He makes Jayce work. Measures the curve of his spine, the spread of his thighs, the curl of his toes. Everything factors into the eventual “Hmm” he sometimes receives after exerting all of his energy on getting his Viktor off.

So, it’s less about Talis and more about the Herald, he supposes.

Around a third of the way down, Jayce starts to grit his teeth. He moves the hand between his legs up to rub at his cock in little strokes, attempting to ease the way further. When Viktor pauses, though, he grunts in disapproval.

“Why’d you stop?” Jayce demands.

“You’re clearly uncomfortable,” Viktor says. “It’s okay to need a second to breathe.”

“I like it,” Jayce says, in reference to the discomfort, and Viktor doesn’t think he’s lying. Perhaps that’s a kink to be explored another day. “Keep going.”

Viktor moves to put his own hands up behind Jayce’s knees and spreads him out further. The yelp of surprise that earns him makes pride well up in his chest. He leans forward and winces. “Give me a pillow.”

Without question, Jayce uses his free hand to pull a pillow down from the headboard and tuck it under Viktor’s right knee. “Good?”

Viktor adjusts his stance and nods. “Yeah,” he hums. “Thank you. Now relax.”

Jayce leans back, moving one hand behind his head and keeping the other between them to help spread his cunt. When Viktor starts to push in again, he gasps, mouth dropping open and eyes fluttering. “Shit…”

“Jayce—”

“It’s good,” the younger man whimpers. “Don’t stop…”

“You’re not usually so quiet, Defender,” the Herald says behind his mask, voice modulated and monotone. Just as it always is. “What’s gotten you so…distracted?”

Jayce is taken out of his thoughts pretty quickly at that, his eyes blinking rapidly as he turns toward the other end of the room where his Viktor is sitting beside Talis’s. With the mask on, it’s impossible to get a read on how he feels about Jayce’s sudden silence. Maybe he’s pleased. Maybe he’s turned on by it. Maybe he’s relieved. Or…perhaps he’s concerned.

“Just…a lot to think about,” Jayce says instead of getting stuck on that thought. “Not every day you get to literally fuck yourself.”

Talis laughs, the sound breathless and winded as he works his hips. The two of them have been taking turns so far, one of them doing all the heavy lifting of thrusting against the double-ended dildo, but that’s proving to become harder and harder with the way Talis’s thighs are trembling.

“Maybe it’s time to let them come,” the other Viktor says. Jayce can see the pretty curve of his brow as he watches, lust clear on his features. Something in him longs to see that expression on the Herald’s face again, but he quickly shakes it away.

“You think?” The Herald asks, putting a curled finger to his chin. “I don’t know if they’ve earned it yet. Talis may have, but the Defender…”
