Until I visited the museum in Amsterdam, I had no idea that Van Gogh had painted a Pieta. This one, I think, is particularly effective. The feeling of loss is couched in every brush stroke. For me, the works of Van Gogh are always felt as much as seen.

This is Van Gogh’s La Pieta, which is a depiction of Mary reaching to hold Jesus’s lifeless body. The colors are mostly dark. Mary is in dark blue and Jesus is slumped against her, a white cloth around his waist. They appear to be near the mouth of a cave with a yellow glow in the background, against a stormy sky.

Indian pinks. Native plant with long pointed green leaves and narrow red tube shaped flowers. Each flower has a five-pointed yellow starburst flower that emerges from the top.

Jack-in-the-pulpit. Native plant about 18 inches tall that has five large green leaves on each stem. This one has three pulpits—a flower shaped like a narrow tube that widens as it goes up and has a protective hood over the top.
