This is a chess game and we are watching someone move pieces across the board. Their behaviour is rushed, they’re clearly learning on the go, and their work will be strewn with errors. But it is deliberate. And God help me, being deliberate might just be enough. The standards of political leadership in this country have declined to such an extent that someone acting in a deliberate manner may actually be sufficient to earn them my confidence.

What we have seen this week is a professional political operation. Nothing more. Not a triumphant one, not one that is sure of victory, not one that is insulated against mistakes. But a professional political operation operating in a professional fucking way. Andy Burnham has a diagnosis and a proposed cure - in short, he has an argument, and he has a communication strategy to deliver that argument.

This judgment does not mean that those with gender-critical beliefs can ‘misgender’ trans persons with impunity. The Claimant, like everyone else, will continue to be subject to the prohibitions on discrimination and harassment that apply to everyone else. Whether or not conduct in a given situation does amount to harassment or discrimination within the meaning of EqA will be for a tribunal to determine in a given case.

The Tribunal did not err in undertaking a balancing exercise between the Claimant’s rights and the rights of others. Misgendering trans persons necessarily amounted to harassment and a violation of their Article 8 rights to “personal development and to physical and moral security”, which can no longer be regarded as a matter of controversy: see Goodwin v UK [2002] IRLR 664 at para 90; Campbell and Cosans v UK (Application no.35968/97) at para 56 and AP, Garçon and Niçot v France (Application nos.79885/12, 52471/13 and 52596/13) at para 92. The Tribunal was not requiring the Claimant to refrain from expressing her beliefs, but merely to stop harassing trans persons by misgendering them.

YouGov has Farage with a much lower rating than the polling average. Starmer is one of the most unpopular PMs of all time. Why Farage is so popular I have no idea - he is utterly dreadful.

Note that the Equality Act makes specific provisions recognising that a tendency to physical or sexual abuse of other persons, exhibitionism and voyeurism are behaviours which do not need to be tolerated at work. It is well-recognised in the medical literature that for some people (predominantly male), transgender identification can be linked to a paraphilia or sexual fetish such as autogynephilia, exhibitionism or interest in non-consensual sexual activity. Normal standards of workplace propriety, professionalism and safeguarding are a reasonable expectation and are not overridden by any protected characteristic.

What I find amusing about you recommending the previous article is the conclusion - it’s the comms:

Labour's response to the loss of Caerphilly is "more of the same, but faster." They've learned nothing.

At first Thomas-Symonds said that he did not like responding to anonymous quotes, but that he accepted voters felt “frustration about the pace of change”.

When Justin Webb, the presenter, said that was exactly the point being made by the source who delivered the quote (associating “Starmerism” with change being too slow), Thomas-Symonds replied:

I don’t accept the point that’s being put in that quote at all.

I think politics is about what people face, the challenges they face in their everyday lives.

We always knew coming into government in July 2024, I think it’s an inheritance that’s probably the worst since 1945, in terms of the economic backdrop and the state of our public services together. We knew it was going to take time.

What the message that we’ve listened to on the doorsteps in Caerphilly is very much telling us is to really redouble our efforts on that delivery and making a difference in people’s everyday lives. And that’s exactly what we’re determined to do.

Merz is clearly desperate to preserve NATO based on what he said a couple of days ago.

During Sunday's interview Merz defended his coalition's historic decision to loosen the debt brake on defense spending - made possible by an unexpected U-turn by Merz's conservatives right after the election - and even went so far as to link it to NATO's survival.
"We were essentially able to preserve NATO with our decision," he said.
"I was at the NATO summit in The Hague June 24-25]. If we hadn't changed the constitution and we hadn't been willing to allow the Federal Republic of Germany to spend 3.5 percent on defense plus 1.5 percent on the necessary infrastructure, then NATO would probably have disintegrated that day. We prevented that."
