Carrying on the shoe vibe for #findsfriday🩰... We saw these in the Battle Museum of Local History near Hastings. Well worth a visit. Very apt as we chat decorative shoes in our Vindolanda episode released yesterday! The studs gave traction. Style + function 👌. 📸 us #romanbritain #archaeology

It's #tombtuesday, and here we have an image of a standard bearer from a 3rd century CE tombstone, on display at the museum in Chesters Roman Fort. The standard itself is held proudly aloft in the bearer's right hand 🚩. 📸 us #romanbritain #hadrianswall #archaeology #romanmilitary #ancientrome
Tombstone of Vellibia Ertola, at Corbridge #Roman Town, Hadrian’s Wall Who 'lived most happily for four years and six days' She is shown holding a ball & the holes above the inscription maybe held hooks for hanging garlands. 📸 Us #romanbritain #archaeology #ancientrome #Hadrianswall #TombTuesday

Celebrating #ReliefWednesday with a mini altar depicting a #frog or #toad 🐸 Found at Chesters #Roman Fort, home to a cavalry regiment on Hadrian’s Wall. Worth an offering or two to stay cool in the heat wave! 📸 Us, Chesters Museum #romanbritain #archaeology #ancientrome #Chesters #Hadrianswall
This fine #EpigraphyTuesday we wanted to share this inscribed bronze tablet - which shows a mortgage contract for a house, between two women 🤝 1st half of the 2nd C. BCE. 📸 Us, Archaeological Museum of Corfu #skystorians #ancientbluesky #AncientGreece #archaeology #classicsbluesky

Here is a reconstruction, demonstrating how it would have decorated the bowl. The ship itself is believed to have been a small merchant vessel, less than 20 meters long, carrying roughly 300 amphorae and other bronze pieces. It’s an important shipwreck for understanding Roman trade routes.
Found in a shipwreck off the French coast near Cannes, this Bronze Silenus head decorated a large drinking bowl. Silenus is crowned with ivy & grapes - befitting a friend of Dionysus 🍇 📸 Us #Roman Museum in Nice 1st C. BCE. #Archaeology #Skystorians #AncientBluesky #Classicsbluesky #AncientRome

Celebrating #romansitesaturday with Chesters Roman Fort, home to a cavalry regiment of c.500. A barrack held 32 men + horses, a living area housed 3 men & 3 horses. A tad cramped! 🐎 Compare that to the garrison commander's house with bathhouse & underfloor heating... #romanbritain #archaeology
Here is a wonderful souvenir from a day out at the arena! This #FindsFriday why not go home with a little model of your favourite #gladiator🗡️ N.B. The sword isn’t original but would it have been removable!? 📸 Us, Musei Civici #Padua #Archaeology #AncientBluesky #Classicsbluesky #AncientRome
Happy #phallusthursday! We found this cheeky image (maybe representing a protective amulet?) in the museum at Chesters Roman Fort. Open since 1896, it showcases lots of finds from #hadrianswall, collected by antiquarian John Clayton. Do visit if you can! #romanbritain #skystorians #archaeology
