🇵🇪 Illegal gold mining is transforming parts of the Peruvian Amazon. With support from Conservation X Labs, we worked with Peru's Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado (SERNANP) to create Project Inambari—a free tool to detect gold mining activity using satellite imagery.

🏝️ Off the coast of Bintan, Indonesia, a 37-acre island resort overlooks one of the world's busiest shipping corridors, where tankers on global shipping routes pass just offshore. Protecting these waters is part of protecting the community that depends on them for the resort's founder, Andrew Dixon.

In 2005, just 60 well pads existed in the study area. By 2010, that number had grown to over 1,400, a nearly 24-fold increase in five years. We also scraped nearly 30,000 chemical disclosure reports from FracFocus, making previously inaccessible data freely available for public scrutiny & research.

🗺️ In 2013, we launched FrackFinder, a crowdsourced project enlisting volunteers to map fracking well pads across Appalachia. Within 29 days, 233 volunteers completed nearly 90,000 image classifications, revealing how rapidly the region had been industrialized by fracking. The results were striking.

SkyTruth visualized global LNG vessel traffic throughout 2023, creating a map that shows routes of all LNG tankers, including the Diamond Gas Rose, which traveled approximately 85,000 kilometers in 2023–enough distance to circle the globe twice.

🪸 Known as the “Amazon of the Seas,” the #CoralTriangle is a critical marine biodiversity hotspot. As countries in Southeast Asia invest in liquified natural gas as a “clean” shipping fuel, new shipping routes and terminals pose a great pollution risk in this already-threatened region.

of Russia’s shadow fleet and the hidden threat it poses globally to marine ecosystems & vessel safety. SourceMaterial reporters collaborated closely with our analysts to determine which vessels on a dark fleet list were associated with oil slicks detected by Cerulean, our oil slick detection tool.

🛢️In March 2024, members of the British coast guard service spotted a 23-kilometer-long oil slick off the Scottish coastline. Their report detailed the vessel responsible—an aging tanker carrying around 1 million gallons of crude oil from Russia to a refinery in India. 👇
