The cropped section reads" 'Jasken put one finger to an ear bud. "The boats are ready, sir." "They are? Good." He looked round the other people in the slim barge. He clapped his hands, stopping most of the other..."' and the rest of the sentence is cropped out.

The page number has been included because this edition of "Surface Detail" doesn't contain a table of contents, for some godforsaken reason.

Okay, but CONSIDER:

A screenshot of a terminal the game Marathon 2: Durandal, from level 22, "Kill Your Television".

The left side of the terminal is displaying a heavily corrupted and static filled image that is illegible.

The right side of the terminal is displaying a stream-of-consciousness monologue without any whitespace, and with some characters replaced with ASCII symbols, as if the text is corrupted or damaged. The text appears to say, as I've parsed it, the following:

"I have been Roland Beowulf Achilles Gilgamesh. I have been called a hundred names and will be called a thousand more before the world goes dim and cold. I am a hero. She has been nameless since our birth, a constant adversary caring for nothing but my ruin. A sword drenched in my blood, forever my greatest and only love. She is the dark one, the enemy and lover without whom my very existence would be pathetic and vulgar. Our relationship is complex and perhaps eternal. We met once in the garden at the beginning of the world and unaware of our twin destinies we matched stares across a dry fountain and I recall her smiling at me before she devoured the lawn and trees with a translucent blue flame and tore flag stones from the path and hurled them into the sky screaming my sins. I powder a granite monument in a soundless flash, showering the grass with molten drops of its gold inlay sending smoking chips of stone skipping into the fog. She splinters an ancient oak with a force that takes my breath and hurls me to the ground. She [unclear word, five letters starting with L E A]"

Need me a woman like that. (A woman who will just fucking kill me.)

Okay, but consider:

A screenshot of a terminal from the game Marathon 2: Durandal from level 27: "Feel the Noise".

On the left side is an image of an arming sword, with the name "Durandal" inscribed on it, buried point first into the three-eyed skull of a Pfhor.

On the right side is the following text:

"Durandan, Durandal, Durandana. Charlemagne used to always call me
Durandana, the fruitcake. All the many
implements of war to him were in some way feminine. Not that you know the story. Tycho never got it right either."

The remainder of the text has been obscured to prevent story spoilers.

What remains provides ironclad proof of my as-yet-unpublished "Transmasc Durandal" theory.
