There are Red Flag Warnings today across the inland Northwest. Please heed them.
In the past two weeks I’ve had multiple transportation engineers tell me it’s no longer possible to create a plaza across a street (like Westlake Park in Seattle, seen here), because of new requirements for tactile surfaces. Accessibility is great, but the field is missing the forest for the trees!
🚨 Substantial thunderstorms are possible across the Northwest tomorrow! 🚨 This carries a significant risk of new fire starts, especially in north central and northeast WA, and north Idaho. Even worse, some of this lightning could be dry. Please exercise extreme caution tomorrow!
My conspiracy take is that the real solution (because it would better align with preferred time and light patterns) is just to roll back the changes George W. Bush and the Republicans made in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
Finally replaced my stolen e-bike. Went analog this time—can’t stomach the risk of losing another one. Bike theft is a scourge but I’m not gonna let it stop me from getting around.

Urbanists need to do more to reckon with the fact that the updated PROWAG and evolving interpretations of ADA make it far more difficult to build the types of public spaces we say we want.
Right now, Nate is barnstorming the district (almost literally!) in a way few challengers ever have. Here are a few events he’s been doing. He’s not relying solely on Spokane voters. He’s actually working on rural margins.
I agree that the core reason for the slow construction in Seattle at the moment has to do with cost, not zoning, but Seattle’s middle housing code is substantially more restrictive than ours. We literally allow 40’ apartment buildings with any unit count in R1 neighborhoods.
This crowd was excellent, fun, and super family-friendly. If you’re looking for a place to watch the game on Monday without the commitment and crowd in downtown Seattle, Bellevue’s Spring District is a stellar option. Sip-and-stroll beverages, food trucks, space for kids to roam, and great audio.

Not only did this event run for NINE HOURS through absurd heat, but it brought out the passions of the organizers and the community. – Families with young kids playing soccer. – Global runway with Indian and Chinese artists. – Local small biz and nonprofits running it all. This is America, to me.
What an incredible community vibe today at Bellevue’s Spring District for three excellent games! – Two giant screens – Nine F&B vendors – Expanded beer garden – Community and sponsor booths – One multicultural fashion show – Thousands of people through the day Public spaces bring people together!
