hate to come across as a hatchet faced curmudgeon who can't handle a bit of harmless fun but fuck off
Delighted, excited, stoked, jazzed, chuffed and semi-levitating to reveal the cover for my forthcoming poetry collection The Revelation Tapes, out at the end of the month with @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social AND you can pre-order it now, from this very link - www.brokensleepbooks.com/product-page...
The Works of Vermin - Hiron Ennes. I don't often use the word "spellbinding" but this grotesque, intoxicating book deserves it. rarely has the weird, disgusting and tragic been so beautifully brought to life. heady prose, gorgeous world-building, wonderful characters, with a wounded romantic heart
imagine if they'd spent the last two years committing to this. obviously we would still be getting this heatwave but it would feel like the government was working to do something about it, rather than shrugging and saying "eh ..... suffer and die I guess"
these days, if you try to use this helpful behavioural resource on one of these "dot com kids", they will call you a pedo on the local news
Wolf Worm - T. Kingfisher. very enjoyable slice of southern gothic body / bug horror. definitely not for the squeamish or entomophobic, takes its time getting to the gross stuff but it's very gross when you get there (and vividly described). characters, time period and setting richly realised too
amazing that he can't even clear the lowest possible bars at this stage, the stage where you're expected say your most ambitious, persuasive stuff
it's taken longer than I would have expected, but I think this might be the week where I finally become the fucking Joker
pleased to be able to finally reveal that I was briefly hired by Sam Mendes to consult on his upcoming Beatles biopics! he didn't like any of my ideas, so I am now free to share them publicly
Necrosmologies - Anthony Cartwright. really interesting mini collection of speculative / horror prose, rooted in a very tactile and lived-in working class British milieu. striking, sometimes poetic, often grim vignettes relayed in an almost matter-of-fact register, with an edge of deadpan humour
if you need encouragement, here are some nice things that the likes of @starkholborn.bsky.social, @thebrainofchris.bsky.social, @thefantasyhive.bsky.social, @runalongwomble.bsky.social, @booksbonesbuffy.bsky.social and @jamreads.com have said about the book
writing tips - experimental fiction edition. you might think that experimental fiction is the type of writing that needs the fewest rules. you'd be dead wrong
interesting, unsettling piece about a few strains of AI video slop currently doing the rounds. found this passage particularly resonant with regard to the uncanny emptiness of this stuff. there's no *there* there. but it's still having an effect. zombie content open.substack.com/pub/tiktokti...
writing tips - sci-fi edition! parts I and II, because I honestly have too much expertise here to contain to a single image
writing tips - poetry edition. supercharge your stanzas, enchant your enjambment, iambic on your pentameter til you rhyming couplet
Looking Glass Sound - Catriona Ward. first I've read of hers, keen to read more, even if this didn't fully work for me. elegantly written, atmospheric and a nice sense of creeping dread, though I found that slightly undercut by a series of slightly rushed twists and reversals. intriguing though!
good morning. thought I would share some writing advice that I've found useful over the years. hopefully it will resonate 🙏
💥 Poetry folks 💥 Is there a regular poetry night in your town / city that you enjoy? If so, please can you tell me what it's called so I can pester the organisers about the book tour I'm putting together? Bonus points if you know them by name and can put me in touch 😊 Thanks! Please re-sbleet
