For the first time in 50 years, America lost its status.

American democracy is in a “much faster deterioration process than any other democracy in modern times.”

The Polity project, a third independent dataset used by political scientists for half a century, now classifies the United States as an anocracy, a hybrid system, writing bluntly that the country is “no longer considered a democracy and lies at the cusp of autocracy.”

The boiling frog premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death.

The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to or be aware of sinister threats that arise gradually rather than suddenly.

I can’t help thinking of our planet as a boiling frog...

I have been told by Bluesky that I am registered as under 18 and need to undergo an age verification process. I am 68! I'm really, REALLY suspicious though when it turns out that the age checking outfit, KWS, insist on being given my credit card details. Not going to happen. Deeply disappointing.

I remember when Boris Johnson was attempting to
bypass UK Parliament and shut it down so
he could get his own way.

Many commentators openly wished we had a system of checks and balances like the US Constitution to reign
him in. Sadly, it appears the US Constitution may
not be quite as robust as we thought.

I sincerely hope the USA survives this awful time
intact so it can rebuild and regain the
world’s respect and trust.

In 2016 17,410,742 people voted for UK’s Brexit. In 2024 77,302,580 people voted for USA’s Trump. While coping with the awful consequences of those elections, please be kind to those who wish they hadn’t voted the way they did. They are suffering as much as everyone else.
