Adoptive and kinship families came to Parliament this week to speak about the impact of cuts to therapeutic support and what needs to change. As someone who was adopted myself, this is very close to my heart. The government’s proposals must not further weaken support for adopted children.
Coastal communities, like Torbay, experience very different challenges to large metropolitan cities. Ed Davey visited Torbay on Friday to highlight these unique challenges, such as the lack of well-paid jobs, which is another reason why Torbay Hospital is so important to us as our largest employer.
The Government are currently looking for your opinion on which in-person banking services people really use, and to determine the future of in-person banking services in the UK. If high street banks are important to you can submit your opinion here: www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/accesstoba...
There is a new Optical Express in Torquay now, which focuses on refractive surgery and ACES, NHS cataract treatment in as little as four weeks. The Optical Express is offering free eye exams. It is great to have these services available in our community. I was delighted to open the Optical Express.
If you have experienced an issue receiving second class post please get in touch with me and my team at steve.darling.mp@parliament.uk. I have already written to Royal Mail and the Minister and will be pushing to fix this issue. #mail #post #royalmail #Torbay #Torquay #Paignton #torbayweekly
Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay hold regular events to help people get into cycling in the Bay! I spoke to Beth Huntley, Bike Mayor for Torbay, about what options are available. On Saturday the 18th they are holding a workshop where you can try and e-bike and go on a short, fun ride.
Here's what I've been up to this last week as your MP... #Torbay #Torquay #Paignton #torbayweekly #TorbayHour #BoostTorbay #brixham #CommunityMatters #southdevon
We are fundraising for Devon In Sight! My team, Peter and Owen, and I are racing across Devon. We will be competing against 10 teams to raise money for Devon In Sight, the charity which supports those who are blind and partially (donate using this link: www.justgiving.com/page/race-ac... )
This Saturday St Marychurch celebrated Armed Forces day with a service on Fore Street, with over 130 people in attendance. I was delighted to attend and pay my respects to the men and women in the Armed Forces Community. #ArmedForces #Torbay #Torquay #Paignton #torbayweekly #TorbayHour
Barton Cricket Club celebrated 100 years with the opening of their new changing rooms this weekend. These were half funded by the community infrastructure levy from planning developers, and half funded by the FA. It was a pleasure to attend the charity cricket match against Torquay United!
What would you do with £250,000? Whilst I would spend this money fixing 4,400 pot holes, Nigel Farage has blown it on his vanity project of resigning and then re-standing as an MP. That's why I have submitted a Written Question asking how much by-elections have cost the taxpayer since 2021. #Torbay
The building at 62-70 Victoria Street is finally being demolished. The building has been a state of disrepair for years and in May falling masonry caused widespread road closures. The Liberal Democrats have been calling for the Council to finally sort this out and will be holding them to account.
Antisocial Behaviour in Torbay is deeply concerning. I have been holding regular meetings with senior police commanders and local neighbourhood policing teams and am pleased to report that the Paignton neighbourhood team have successfully obtained two residential partial closure orders.
The Coastguard Agency's plans to cut volunteers' remuneration is troubling. I spoke with Lucy from Brixham Coastguard this week and heard how volunteers often work 16 hour days and have a high success rate. I have signed a Parliamentary motion about this: edm.parliament.uk/early-day-mo...
This year marks 100 years since adoption became legal. I want to thank my adopted parents Eric and Penny for everything they did for me. I will continue to fight for looked after kids and families that foster and adopt in Parliament.
The Labour Government must focus on helping our Hospitality industry by reversing their National Insurance Contribution Hike and reforming business rates. Young people often get their first jobs in hospitality but at the moment there are many difficulties for businesses to hire more people.
The following charities and organisations do amazing work in Torbay. I donate my entire councillor's salary to charity and have given to each of these charities since April of this year.
The Stand Up Paddle Boarding World Cup last week highlighted our beautiful Bay. It was a pleasure to be back in Torbay making full use of our coastline. We need to preserve our coast, which is why it is disappointing to see the Council drop the nationally recognised Blue Flag Awards Scheme.
Torquay Police Neighbourhood team are hosting a pop up surgery at 77 Union Street (the old O2 shop) from midday tomorrow. If you have any concerns regarding antisocial behaviour you wish to share please do come along. #Antisocialbehaviour #ASB #Police #Torbay #Torquay #Paignton #torbayweekly
Lib Dems won two council seats in Dawlish today. Congratulations to Pat and Gary! It was a pleasure helping these two outstanding community campaigners. The canvassing I helped with echoed what I'm finding on the doorstep in Torbay, that the Conservative vote has collapsed.
On Saturday Torbay paid tribute to the British Armed forces community with Torbay Armed Forces Day on Paignton Green. I very much enjoyed being there and showing my support for the men and women of the Armed Forces. I caught up with local commander for the Torbay Cadets Darral Saw.
Thanks to Susie and her team at the Heart Campaign for arranging for Mike Forster to meet with us to discuss his impressive 'Hands Off HRI' campaign which saw off attempts to close Huddersfield Hospital. Torbay Hospital must remain a functioning General Hospital to serve our residents.
At the Health and Safety Executive Science and Research Centre in Buxton, around 450 scientists and engineers undertake cutting edge research to improve safety at work. On Monday, as a member of Parliament's Work and Pensions Select Committee, I was pleased to visit many of their testing sites.
Around 300 people took on the Devon Coast to Coast challenge raising over £140,000 for The Devon Clinic! The walk took place overnight and encompassed 64 miles, and it rained heavily on the walkers. I want to congratulate the amazing organising team and the walkers on this incredible achievement
At the Torbay Rail Summit recently key issues raised included: safety on trains and toilets and waiting areas at Torre station. I will be focussing on these issues specifically moving forward. If you want to raise a different issue you can do so via this online form: buff.ly/C4DTF8n
Massive thank you to Steve Holdup who again pulled off an incredible street party on Reddenhill Road. So many local charities at this buzzing event. I caught up with local commander for Torbay cadets Major Darral Saw. Jennie was also pleased to see Patrick the pony in attendance.
Disagree with the amount your landlord or letting agent is taking from your deposit? A free service can help you challenge it. Details below or at this link: myhousinggateway.org.uk/topics/depos...
The number of people living with a diagnosis of dementia in Torbay is 11,860, making it the top 14th constituency in the country for people living with dementia. Clearly Torbay Hospital deals with a larger proportion of elderly people who need more help. We need increased funding for our Hospital.
Flying rings can be extremely dangerous for seals. Seal Alliance are running a campaign to ban the sale and import of flying rings in the UK. If you want to put pressure on the Government to join with these retailers you can sign the Seal Alliance petition here: www.change.org/SaveOurSeals...
