What matters in training for marathoners New analysis of 100k+ runners Faster runners: -Accumulated 3x the volume of slower runners -Had proportionally more easy running than higher intensities. As my HS coach told me years ago, step 1 is figuring out how to run more.
How you talk to yourself matters. In one study on lifting weights, goal directed self-talk "enhanced performance by 43% once an RPE of eight was reached, resulted in 63% more repetitions, and demonstrated more efficient muscle activation patterns."
In a new paper, researchers argue that: “a primary cause of the rise in mental disorders [in youth] is a decline over decades in opportunities for children and teens to play, roam, and engage in other activities independent of direct oversight and control by adults.”
Meta-analysis finds that taking an ice bath after strength training impairs gains. The inflammation, damage, stress is the SIGNAL for adaptation. Take it away...we blunt the response. Sometimes, damage is a good thing...
Exercising 150 minutes per week for 4 months is helpful for depression, review finds. Get outside and get moving. Start small and easy. For many, a walk is enough when you are starting.
What predicts performance in sport? In a study on elite field hockey players, athletes performed better when they had: -Sense of Autonomy -Sense of Mastery -Feel Belonging -See the game as a challenge instead of a threat
Your mindset impacts how your brain responds to a mistake. People who think they can learn from mistakes pay more attention to the error, trying to correct it. Their brain is primed to learn and grow.
A recent study evaluating athlete's perception of their coaches found that world-leading coaches were perceived as scoring: Higher on: -Conscientiousness -Openness to experience -Perception of emotion -Management of others' emotion Lower: -Narcissism

10. No one gives a shit. No one cares if you run fast in circles or are a bestseller. It doesn’t mean that running or any of your other interests aren’t important, they are, but they should be important to you. Not for anyone else. You get to decide how much value you assign to each craft.
9. Own Your Story: You are the author of your story. In a world that will increasingly intertwine with social media, it can feel like we lose control of our story. That we hand it over to others to control and define. Don't let others define your narrative.
