Today's update... rode the NE section of RTF trails today, plus a few smaller segments elsewhere, and Wandrer has declared "Charlottesville completed" at 99.8% total, 99.9% paved, and 98% unpaved 😀

You know it's a bad one when the estimated time of restoration is "reassessing condition." (For those wondering: the triangle on the outage map is not the location of the incident, which is further north on shamrock, it's the "center" of that outage polygon.)

Earlier this year, I set a goal to ride my eBike on every street in the City of Charlottesville. I'm pleased to report the goal is done! Somewhere along the way I decide to ride all of the unpaved paths, too. I'm now at 99.9% paved progress and 72% unpaved progress.

Oh, my. This CPD press release is a big mess: "several shots were fired." By whom? The suspect? One or more cops? Who knows? Obviously, CPD knows, but they're going out of their way not to make it clear. And, presuming the cops shot at the suspect, why did they shot at some one running away?

CHARLOTTESVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN DOWNTOWN AREA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) is releasing the following information regarding an officer involved shooting that occurred in the early morning hours today in the area of Market Street Park in downtown Charlottesville.

Officers received information that an individual by the name of Daquan Hoffman wanted by Albemarle County on a charge of malicious wounding was in the area of the Downtown Mall. Officers located the individual, who immediately fled on foot. During the foot pursuit several shots were fired, at which point Mr. Hoffman continued to flee. At this time, it does not appear that the suspect was struck by gunfire, and the officer was not injured.

Chief Kochis has requested that the Virginia State Police lead the investigation into this incident in coordination with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.

Chief Kochis has also briefed the Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB) Executive Director Walker on this incident.

The Virginia State Police will serve as the lead investigative agency.

CPD will release additional information as it becomes available and as the investigation permits.

AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) is an ocean conveyor belt that keeps Europe far warmer than it'd otherwise be. There's further evidence of weakening—to avoid devastating consequences of the tipping point where it stops, we need dramatic acceleration towards a post-carbon economy

A region of the northern Atlantic–sometimes called the “cold blob”–has cooled since the 19th Century while the rest of the world has warmed. It is particularly the ocean which has cooled there. Scientists have been discussing whether this is because ocean currents bring less heat into this region, or because more heat is being lost through the sea surface there. An analysis of temperature data sets based on measurements show it is the former–changing ocean heat transport–which dominates heat content changes in the “cold blob.” This is of concern because a further weakening of Atlantic heat transport in future climate change could lead to serious impacts on climate and weather conditions in Europe and other parts of the world.

Not feeling well today, so no Sat ride. Still, a long ride last Sunday gives me a big jump to share. I'm now at 89.1% of Cville overall (96% paved, 24% unpaved). To finish the paved stuff, I'm guessing there's about 5-6 hours of riding + an anticipated early June map update left 🚲 😃

Great morning for a long bike ride. Streets in blue are the ones I hadn't recorded a ride on until today. Highlights of the ride were some unpaved wooded routes & running into @bradjc.bsky.social on perhaps the most tucked-out-of-the-way-from-any-reasonable-bike-route cul-de-sac in town

This week's increase is due to (a) riding more streets and (b) map updates that more accurately reflect where riding a bike is allowed and safe. I'm now at 83.78 overall, 90.8% of paved streets and 17% of unpaved streets.
