Something that struck me about this book is how even when this type of nationalism and liberalism were forcefully announcing themselves on the world scene at the same time, the contradictions were almost immediately apparent in a "rights for me, not for thee" sort of way
Struggled with this one. The second party system never made much sense to me, but I think I understand it better now. The writing is a bit dry and there's an endless parade of three-name congressmen who speak in puzzles that made this a slog at times. No regrets, but it's a qualified recommendation
This is a must-read for any fan, and Breslin keeps it short and sweet at barely 100 pages
