I want to add a couple things to this great thread: successful illustrators during the golden age of illustration (1880 to 1930 or so) did everything from fairytales for children (ex. The Blue Fairy Book) to Paradise Lost (see some examples of Arthur Rackham and Walter Crane’s work below).

That salary is less than I made as a production editor 10 years ago. Actually only a couple thousand more than entry level publishing jobs in 2010. budgets are strapped, but if this is how little we respect the work of producing quality published research, the slop crisis will continue.

I was looking at the figures in Albert Kapr’s amazing 1983 book The Art of Lettering and I came across this example of neume musical notation, and I realized the lined staff and notes bears a lot of relation to the way they trained hand scribes proportional letter construction.
