italy reminiscing again: i was soooo excited to stand in the presence of bronzino's portrait of eleanor of toledo while in florence! this is one of my favorite paintings ever, and the details in her clothing & jewelry were incredible to see up close

Don't Hesitate by Mary Oliver

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don't hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise, and not very often kind. And much can never be redeemed.
Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world. It could be anything, but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that's often the case. Anyway, whatever it is, don't be afraid of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.

In this exceptionally hard fight, Hamilton had to lead the charge without Washington. The president supported assumption but did not want to be accused of partisanship and so hesitated to express a public opinion.

[He had] powerful ways of communicating his likes and dislikes, through subtle graduations of tone. With strangers or acquaintances, he addressed letters to "Sir." As he warmed up, he wrote them as "Dear Sir," and when he grew very close, they were favored with "My Dear Sir." He was no less artful in closing letters. If he went from signing "Humble Obedient Servant" to "Affectionate Obedient Servant," the recipient had made a major leap forward in his emotions. Washington expressed displeasure with people less often with open rebukes than with the silent treatment, a sudden chill in the air, and a reversion to curt, businesslike communications.

This generation of young Frenchmen was saturated with the virtues of the Roman Republic, especially through the writings of Plutarch, Livy, and Tacitus. Lafayette first encountered Julius Caesar's Commentaries under Fayon's guidance. He gained a valuable insight from the Roman's work: a writer can brag about himself shamelessly and get away with it if he writes in the third person.
