Scan of a 1984 DEC Rainbow marketing/support media image. Shows a woman at a computer keyboard and monitor, plus a selection of 5.25" floppy discs. On the screen is a freaking color bar chart. We absolutely were so bonkers on bar graphs in the 80s because this is how you demonstrate what you need computers for. It has to be color because as much as we love bar charts, having bar charts in color is NEXT LEVEL. In the background is a poster extolling the virtues of Massachusetts as a Scenic Discovery with an image of a rocky beach. I can imagine myself there, freezing from the cold air, wishing I was inside and warm. It never would have occurred to me to use an all caps serif face and then smash the kerning together. Kerning is too kind of a word here because that would imply some individual adjustments to each letter relationship. Nope, it is just default kerning, just uniformly scaled to be much tighter. This results in a very nice snug fit of the A and C due to the slope of the A and the bowl of the C nestling together, but at the front, the M absolutely refuses to touch a single serif to the neighboring A, as if it is a red lined Boston neighborhood. Sad.
