I've started to move away from the chunky Hammer box sets, as lovely as they are. But this will do very nicely, thank you. Saw this for the first time only a few months ago and loved it. #xtheunknown

I've decided I really like grouper. Mainly because they're big enough for these 50 year-old eyes to see, unlike the tiny creatures my dive guides try to show me. Grouper also have an air of "don't bother me, I'm thinking", which appeals.

Patrick was the first - initially reluctant - interview we did for The Savages. The fact he couldn't remember it inspired my whole approach to the doc. It was lovely to spend time with him and his charming wife Amanda. Their enduring love for one another was so evident.

Make a Doctor Who title less scary.

Well, my Doctor Who - The Movie steelbook feels like it's been in a furnace.

With a bank holiday sort-out approaching, it might be time to take the spear from The Savages documentary to the tip.

The fact is, I would now like a steelbook for every Troughton story.

And now the steelbook has arrived, which hopefully means The Savages is going through quite a few letterboxes today.

Well, look what's just arrived. Remembering/Forgetting The Savages is on disc 3, by the way...

It was fun watching these ropey prints as though freshly returned from Hong Kong. I'm old enough to remember every blemish, tramline and jump from the 1992 VHS release, which retailed at the increased price of £12.99 because BBC Video had added an intro by director Morris Barry.

What's that? Buy Spearhead from Space for the sixth time in my life? Alright. But it must be the last. Absolutely the last. Final. Full stop. Never again. Cross my heart and hope to die. Or at least until the Standard Edition comes out.

It's been about 16 months since I was asked to make a doc about The Savages and 13 since I went to interview Peter for it. So it was great to finally be at the BFI last night to watch the animation on the big screen.

I thoroughly enjoyed this by @cooraysmith.bsky.social. It probably doesn't shift my opinion of the transmitted story very much, but it certainly adds to my already substantial appreciation of this era. It's the first of The Black Archive series I've read - I'm already looking for my next one...

Reading now while, appropriately enough, listening to a jazz record.

Had to buy a new 4k player as my old one packed up over Christmas. Naturally, the first thing I'm watching is some black and white telly from the '50s.

My army continues to grow.

I realise I've never really been familiar with the episode titles for The Box of Delights, probably because of the VHS compilation.
