One of the many rockfalls (the largest) observed last sunday in the Argentière Glacier basin! 🧊🔥 Here in Les Droites (4,000 m asl) north face! 🏔
Perito Moreno (PN Los Glaciares, ARG) 30th June 2026 Its frontal stability lasted for more than a century, thanks to a morainal bank! 🧊⚓ But human-induced climate change is relentless and after initiating retreat by 2018-2019, it is now on track for losing several kms 🔥 🛰️ Copernicus Sentinel-2

Wandering above that mighty ice stream under the watchful gaze of one of the most beautiful mountains in the Alps! 🧊🏔️ All of this amid incredibly dry conditions! 🔥 Snowline on Argentière Glacier is already at the elevation of 'end of summer' in a 'normal' year... 😲
We are losing much more than aesthetic landscapes! 🧊🔥 Argentière Glacier overtopped by Les Droites north face (4,000 m asl) yesterday! At the moment of this video it was 32.3 °C in Chamonix (1,042 m asl)! 🥵
Look how tiny is the remaining connection, at the bedrock knob approx. 1 km upvalley the current front of Zinal Glacier! 🧊 This link will soon be severed, and the glacier tongue will no longer be fed! 🔥
Exceeding 40°C in France 🔥🌡️ 114 instances during last heatwave (June 17–29) Previous record : August 2023 (87 instances) How much next week? 😢 Yes, but 1976... 🤡 Via @MystereMeteo
Saharan dust deposition at high elevation in the Alps (Dôme du Gouter, 4,304 m asl, Mont Blanc massif) seems to coincide with post-Green Sahara 'warm' periods! 🏜️💨❄️ agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

Tignes is one a few places where you can sample moraine boulders for cosmogenic dating with the music of Rage Against the Machine blaring at full volume from just a few meters above, from the chairlift tower located right on the moraine itself!! 🔨🎶😅
Sampling for cosmogenic dating on Holocene moraines today in Tignes by @edytem.bsky.social dream team! 🧊🔨 Not the definition of wilderness, but nice scenery and samples and hopefully good constraints to come on paleoglacier extent in the valley! ⏱️

Robust attribution of global industrial-era glacier mass loss to anthropogenic climate change 🧊🔥 'Our central estimates are that the magnitude of the anthropogenic warming over the industrial era ranges from 91–98 % of the observed, depending on region' egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/20...
A single graph says it all! 📈 Daily temperature in France (1961–1990 baseline) 🌡️ Red: above long-term normal. Dark red: >95th percentile. Extremes aren't outliers anymore — they're now part of the story 🔥 And there are still some who say there have been “cold” periods! 🤡 Via @drxeo.eu 🙏
Bossons Glacier 2010 | 2026 Anthropogenic warming in action! 🧊🔥 When your kids ask you what a glacier was like... you'll still have the photos! 😢
The 2003 heatwave (record in terms of intensity in F), was shattered by the June heatwave, occurring 1.5 month earlier! 🔥 Wait... temp. will not even drop below thresholds marking the end of a heatwave before the arrival of a new one expected as early as this weekend! ☠️ Via @sergezaka.bsky.social
We are late June, and while we should be admiring snow-capped 4,000ers peaks, there is absolutely no snow left even at the highest elevations! ❄️🧊🔥 Here electric light over Moming Glacier few minutes before a large storm ⚡ Zinalrothorn (4,221 m asl) at the background 🏔️
A chunk of Zinal Glacier ice, exported by proglacial stream, awaits its inevitable end under a gloomy sky! 🧊🔥
Today is #GlacierLossDay 2026 for Swiss glaciers! 🧊🔥 The moment when the snow accumulated during winter has been used up and further melt affects glacier ice rather than protective winter snowpack ❄️⚖️ During last decades, this day occurred in August... ⏱️ Via @landervt.bsky.social 1/
Bossons Glacier this evening! 🧊🔥 Tmax in Chamonix (1,100 m asl) was 33°C today (at 6:00 pm, one hour before this picture was taken...)! Writing these numbers feels so surreal... 😱 We are CONSUMING the agony of a world that no longer exists.
The spectacular NW face of Olan (3564 m asl, Ecrins massif) yesterday! 😍 This 1,100 m-high rock surge dominates an avalanche-fed glacier complex (La Maye Gl., that spanned 2250 to 2500 m) - now almost gone! 🔥 It has left behind an interesting example of a creeping body formed after the LIA! 🧊
1:00 pm and the Humidex crosses the danger threshold in western France! 🥵 Welcome in an unprecedented nightmare...😱 Put yourself in the shoes of most vulnerable, as well as the animals and plants that could suffer unprecedented losses... Current highest temp: 45.2°C! Speechless 🗺️ Meteovillages
Skeiðarárjökull (SE Iceland) 1996 | 2026 This 15 km-wide glacier tongue has retreated 2 km between these two pictures! 🧊📈 100% man-made 🏭🔥 Enjoy! 🙃 📷 Andy Russell
One of the oldest depictions of an Andean glacier! 🧊 In 1858, French geologist Pissis described the front of Cipreses Glacier (34°S, Chile) as already +100 m inboard its frontal moraine (foreground, deposited late 1840s/early 1850s) This shows that LIA ended synchronously in both hemispheres! ⏱️
France is heading towards its second heatwave... BEFORE the summer solstice! 🔥🌡️🥵 It’s just nightmarish, morbid, and foreshadows how difficult life will be in the 21st century. 😰 I’m thinking of the ecosystems that can’t take it anymore... 🌲✝️ Map via @Kevin_Fillin
View across Tour Glacier towards Aiguille Verte and Mont Blanc today! 😍 Very little snow for early June... 🥵 📷 @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social

🧊🔥 New paper out! 🔥🧊 Several intervals of smaller-than-present glacier extent have been documented to date during the Holocene, but the earliest of these was previously unreported... It's finally done, thanks to these incredible subfossil trees! 🌲💍 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
