Every once in a while, I glance at Goodreads and run away before diving in too deeply. I just dipped in the cesspool and caught a one-star review of Big Bad Wolf from 2021. The person haaaated it, which IDGAF about, but this part made me laugh and then stare off into the middle distance.

A snippet of an impressively excoriating review of Big Bad Wolf, shredding it like the person had claws. Good for them. I don't care. But this second paragraph is rather amazing, considering where we are now politically and societally. Here it is: Where to even start, gosh, well. If you thought post-2016 was A Lot, buckle in, folks! In Snyder's world it gets worse. All those awful real-life things plus a big supernatural outing and rarely does the author miss an opportunity to remind you just how shitty things are. Sure, its fiction, but it doesn't feel like fiction when you're rehashing 80% of the crap you've just lived through in a gritty dystopian paranormal fantasy. No thanks.

He’s probably trying to kick off a whole Scream riff, but Nina can’t help but take the question seriously. “Aliens, remember?” she answers without hesitation. They’ve covered this before, but she never gets tired of gushing about it. “Brilliant visuals. A kickass protagonist fighting for her found family. Romance. And a very effective retelling of Beowulf.”
“Beowulf? Really?” Seth puts his tablet aside, invested in her answer. They haven’t touched on this part of her fascination before.
“Mhmm.” She adjusts her reading glasses like a professor and adopts a teaching tone. “The first film is essentially Beowulf versus Grendel. And then, in Aliens, the xenomorph queen can stand in for Grendel’s mother.”
It’s a valuable metaphor in academic circles, and an utterly useless factoid in everyday life. But Seth looks delighted, leaning back against the headboard and nodding emphatically.

It only figures that his penis is more prominent in her mind than the rings. Probably because his penis is what led to the rings. She groans, raising her hand as if she can even make out the band on her fourth finger in what little light streaming in from the gaps in the curtains. Yup. Married. When she reaches out for Baz’s hand on the mattress, she feels the shape of a similar band on his. Also married. And the odds of them having impulsively married people besides each other seem pretty slim.
Ruby rolls to her back again, wondering if she should panic. Or scream. Or panic and scream. Those options seem a little overwrought, even for the ultimate cliché of a Vegas elopement with a stranger.

A few weeks ago, when I was reading Beverly Jenkins's 2002 historical romance A Chance at Love, I stumbled upon this bit of dialogue that cracked me up because it's still applicable—keeping in mind that, in the 1880s, the Dems and Republicans were the opposite of what they are now.

A typed-up up excerpt from A Chance at Love by Beverly Jenkins that says the following: "We can't look to the Democrats for relief. Their main concerns are disenfranchising us as quickly as possible, and restoring the Confederacy. The Republicans may as well be Democrats for all the good they're doing the race these days. So why not form a third party to carry forward the issues of the workers and the poor?"
