Several readers expressed concerns about Aonishiki participating in Jungyo. So far I haven't seen him listed in any bouts. I'm sure he wants to be there for the fans but it's good to see him staying out of the bouts. Not sure about asageiko but I will keep my eyes open for any video.
This work of art is on display now, and until 8/23, at the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Harajuku. It's a part of the ongoing exhibition, "Animals & Monsters: Cute, Scary, and a Little Weird." www.ukiyoe-ota-muse.jp/animalsmonst...
Do any of you annotate your banzuke? Do you mark it up to point out your favorite wrestlers or yusho winners?
When the kids fight for seconds, I take it as a win. Though, neither wanted the skin. I thought that was the best part! Gladly took that from them.
You don't learn Ōhō's "王" until your Level 78 on #Duolingo. I wish we could get these easy shikona and sumo terms earlier...
Prices in Japanese izakaya and restaurants make me jealous. All of this stuff would be ~$14 here, $20+ after tax and tip.
Kotoeiho has one of my favorite somenuki designs. Why? The daruma has both eyes filled in. I just think that's a good sentiment. It looks like he's basically telling you that his dream has come true. He's achieved his goal.
Kirishima posted some clips from Paris. We were there last summer so I am reminiscing. I'm sorry but a whole box Costco macarons will not fill the hole in my soul. That doesn't mean I won't try.
✂️✂️✂️✂️ Both Yuma and Tsurugisho had their retirement ceremonies today. Tsurugisho took the opportunity to also have his wedding reception.
Some of the pics the Sumo Association shared on *that other platform* of Hokutofuji's retirement. Wakatakamoto's first duty as Wakaimonogashira.
Continue to be skeptical of AI. Gemini is being rolled at work but we are being very skeptical and auditing its output, a lot. I was curious what it might say about the release of the upcoming banzuke. Yeah, these are minor goofs about a niche sport but use caution. The warning has a reason.
I reached out to Minatogawa-beya to see if it would be possible for foreign fans to join the supporters' club. Not at the moment, sadly.
And this nugget. Enho made it to Juryo! It's official! Okaryu shin Juryo. Tochitaikai and Hakuyozan return, with Enho.
If you're in Osaka and interested in the dohyo matsuri, they're admitting visitors from 9:30-9:50am on Saturday to watch. The ceremony starts at 10am. Seating on 2nd Floor. No flash photography. Remain in your seats, stay quiet & basically don't be a jackass. www.sumo.or.jp/IrohaKyokaiI...
The Sumo Association posted pictures from its annual emergency preparedness training exercise. It's just weird seeing all these guys in blue jackets. Takakeisho falls off the edge of the image here.
One week into this summer's tour and the troupe is in Yamagata prefecture. They're making their way up to Hokkaido before looping back down towards home.
I need to set a reminder to post this in November. Somehow a nice little car with Fukuoka plates must have taken a wrong turn and gone a few thousand miles out of it's way to end up here. I want this car.
Sumo's Summer Tour begins this weekend! 26 dates, 24 venues! From Osaka to Hokkaido and back to Kanto!
What a difference a fortnight makes in sumo. The hype coming into the tournament in Japanese media was about how it would be the "birth of a legend." Now, we ask, "Really?" And, "Which legend?"
Macarons from the legendary Pierre Hermé with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
For an early father's day, we went back to the yakiniku restaurant in Rockville. This time I got pics of the menu for the Hakuho and Enho sets. We opted for a whole bunch of kalbi.
