Professor at UC Irvine, among other things. This is my personal account, not the University’s. I like light and clarity.
I’m not a Mac person but using this as a home server is a different story… mini but mighty!
That's a wrap, sort of. Today I am officially Emerita Professor. The most rewarding thing was being part of so many young people's bootstrap -- I gained close to 25 children, and they will be in my heart forever! 💖 The group pic here is my latest crop. On to lots of more coding but back to basics!
Self-producing solar energy and storage is very disruptive. Imagine being an energy company used to ppl needing your electricity/gas, and then ppl needing only 1% of that. No wonder there's a war on the decentralization of solar. They aren't going to let that happen without a fight. They may win.
Apparently, we now run a hotel for barn swallows. Unfortunately, they don't know how to use the bathroom... 💩
Am I really going to buy a Beelink mini to code up an administrative assistant for Quinta das Queimas? Yes, yes I am. Local model, low power, harness-first generation-last. Do I have a gazillion other things to do this summer? Also yes. Was this my idea of retirement from UCI? Definitely yes.
About the parrots paper: replace "LLM" with "alternating current" and you'll end up with something similar to Edison's "Red Book" against AC. Caution 2 - Futility of guarantees Caution 3 - Investment Caution 4 - Danger Caution 5 - Moral He was dead serious on safety. History rhymes from time to time
I always wanted to be an astronaut ever since I was a little girl, but clearly that's not gonna happen, and that makes me sad. I'm now considering the closest experience: 🍄 www.nasa.gov/wp-content/u...
Rubrics these days... But, you know, real learning has always been about asking the right questions. It's harder to teach that, though, that's why it's typically done at graduate level.
These models still suck at image generation. The images look good from afar, but Zoom in, and the details are all wrong. No matter how many instructions I give them to fix it, they can't fix it. "Fumly Vineyards" 😂 (The input was the image of the bare bottle with instructions to create an IG image)
Peak Swiss: my daughter, who lives in Switzerland, got a speeding ticket because of an excess speed of… 4km/h. And the letter was sent to… California. They found her! 🤣
Harvest. In a modern world that’s increasingly going insane, I find peace in these millennia-old activities.
Updating University web sites. I guess this will do for the next 20 years... ☺️❤️SE @ UCIrvine
Traveling? No. Giving a good old fashioned paper-based exam to a class of 250 students
There is no way those prompt examples come from students. They most likely come from instructors who are also offloading cognitive tasks. They acknowledge that they can't really differentiate. These two examples are direct, non-collaborative output creation involving creation and analysis skills.
This time, for the first time, there is one student who turned in this note. I'm about to test the limits of my policy.
