I can no longer subscribe to the Atlantic because of pieces like this, so I can’t share it. But Brooks refuses to shut up or just go away, and now he has written a capsule history of the DFL that has sent my blood pressure soaring…

Another treasure from the rescued recipes … On the flip side of a recipe cut out of an issue of seventeen magazine in 1950 is this gem - sadly it continues on another page and is lost to us

Short story by a teenage Sylvia Plath that begins:

The rain started at 4 o’clock that afternoon. Celia saw it begin from the porch, where she sat, curled up in the chins covered armchair, trying to read. Aimlessly, she let the book fall into her lap and stared at the big drops, making dark, wet polkadots on the gray pavement.
Perspiration stood out on her upper lip and trickled in a little stream down her back. Her face was shiny, and she had tied back, her lymph brown hair with a wilted blue bow. From outside, there came a strong smell of melted tire, and the suite, sickening odor of damp grass. A fly buzzed frantically against the screen.
The whole day had been hateful from the morning on. With the rest of the family away for the afternoon, the house was left quiet. The silence was like an expectant vacuum. It’s like that when you’re waiting for the phone to ring, Celia thought. There’s an empty, unfilled place in the atmosphere just waiting to receive the sound. But when it does come, it’s not for you, and you know, that never, never…
She wondered how that would sound out loud. Quotation mark never, never again, quotations. She addressed the flower pot firmly. Her voice was flat, final. The words hung there in the moist, spongy air. Never, never again.
Here she was. It was late August, and it was raining hard now, relentless drops spattering the sidewalk. She was like any other girl, she tried to tell herself. But it didn’t work. She was special. She was Celia. The rain beat out of Tattoo on the streets. Never… Never… Never again.

Unhappily I cannot retype entire recipes - but there is a double spread of a hand scripted series of recipes in a spiral
