Dear Gmail,

I know it's tempting to let AI write the email for me. And sometimes I value your input, because Melissa's email did NOT find me well, and no, I don't want my response to sound snippy before my morning coffee.

But then there are days where I want creative license to write my own emails. I want to sound unapologetically me and overthink where I put that one exclamation mark in my sentence so I strike the right tone of enthusiastic-but-not-desperate.

Your constant need to underline my sentences with your own suggestions - while well intentioned - does not instill confidence. We can agree to disagree. In a world inundated with corporate buzz words, sometimes it's ok to sound a little messy. A little more human.

Today, for Day 8 Circular of #30DayChartChallenge, I'm reflecting on my data viz glow-up journey. A few years ago I experimented with a global choropleth map encircled by a radial bar chart (ggplot2). Now I'm recycling this idea for an interactive data viz to visualize The Global Human Day (D3).

Talk description for Scaling Reports: Template ➡️ Package ➡️ App. It reads: Farmers need to understand their soil data to guide management decisions, but advisors often lack time or coding expertise to generate interpretive reports that make the data actionable. To deliver multilingual, customizable soil health reports at scale, we 1) created a parameterized Quarto template, 2) expanded it into {soils}, an R package for technical users, and 3) developed Dirt Data Reports, a Shiny app for non-coders. From template to package to app, we’ll share lessons from building complementary tools that increase access to soil health insights and support real-world impact. Network popular TV creator Taylor Sheridan's universe of shows and actors. The app allows users to select different creators - Mike Flanagn, Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, and Robert King. The network diagram populates with actors and shows they've been in, showing strong overlap across different series. The current network diagram highlights the most connected actor in Taylor Sheridan's universe - Jordan was in 5 shows and 62 episodes across the Sheridanverse.

Making Shiny apps not look like "Shiny" apps but like ✨shiny✨ apps. HTML, CSS, and JS are my front-end Glam Squad 💅 R is the rugged cowboy wrangling data & herding functions in the back 🤠

Example of modal pop up with sophisticated filter/view set up. Modal has a View label at the top, followed by a tabset panel comprised of 3 tabs: Filters, Sort Rules, and Columns. Filters is the active tab. Underneath it has "All Rules Must Match" with ability to Clear all filters and combined filters.

I’m in good company here when it comes to sentiments about ICE.

I’m horrified. I’m pissed. I’m outraged. I’m heartbroken.

And in the middle of all these feelings it’s so tempting to point fingers and blame the people who voted for “him.”

But what does this accomplish? It doesn’t change minds. It isolates. It makes people defensive. It deepens the divide.

So let’s pivot. Let’s give them permission to change their minds. To opt out. To wake up.

We need to unite. It’s the only way through.

Building tools for myself 👷‍♀️ I project manage across tools - GitHub, Asana, SharePoint Lists, etc. Which makes it hard to quantify work and time block across clients. Working on a "hub" to bring it all together and make life easier 😊

Example of a task manager page that lists all outstanding completed and overdue tasks (value boxes pinned at the top), followed by filters (source, project/repo, assignee, and date range), and then a table of tasks.

Clicking on a task in the table triggers a pop up modal with more info about the task, with the ability to edit the description with a rich text editor. Option to add comments directly as well.

I really enjoy tool building. A use case that comes up a lot in my world is dynamic doc gen. Sharing an example of how you can leverage the powers of Shiny + R markdown to create something bespoke to your needs. Use case below to generate contract docs ✨

Shiny application that blends inputs and markdown to pass into R markdown. The application features a section to fill out information about the client, the project, and then has a markdown editor to pass in text to create nice looking R markdown PDF documents.

Another screenshot of the app, this one focuses on the Compensation section to show how you can use markdown to generate a table.

Example of the PDF output (uses mix of fixed content with the input variables to create dynamic documents).

I had to do a double take on this map. To really highlight “high” vs “low,” it’s clearer to use completely different colors instead of similar hues. The choice below reads like a sequential scale - light blue feels like a middle bin, not a low one. Color opinions aside, interesting info!
