surreal to walk into a waterstones and see my words in a new @lostincult.co.uk book found there now (even if it's up three flights of stairs in a tiny gaming section!)
it's this guy - he also used it again in the key of avalon, one of sega's arcade trading card games which sadly never released outside japan segaretro.org/Hiroyuki_Tag...
i've been trying to find actual footage ever since taito themselves claimed it and the nearby daytona park was often used for location filming... seems like the place never really got as much attention as joypolis, wonder eggs, neo geo world et al xcancel.com/TaitoCorp/st...
said it before and i'll say it again: the mirage, mablethorpe is officially outrun 2 SP SDX's strongest soldier if your arcade isn't buying another location's entire machine just to part it out and keep theirs going, is it really even an arcade?
bloody hell, this one's almost exactly the same (including the perpetually broken ridge racers) as when i last went in the late 2010s as well! although it does look like they tried to carry out a slightly better sega rally LCD conversion than the initial one i saw, lmao
crazy... i've never had a good excuse to visit since 2019 (when i already thought cool riders was on borrowed time - all the cabs in this pic of another arcade up there disappeared not long after...), so imagine my shock when a distant friend who went over easter suddenly DMed me to say it lives lol
go to cleethorpes on the train, walk out the station into the massive arcade right in front of its exit, and if what i heard is true (supported by this recent photo off google maps), it should still be there down some stairs on the left :) i'm told they've kept a pair of outrun 2 SPs as well
properly amazed to hear today how the one UK arcade that held onto an imported cool riders cabinet somehow still has it running, and have actually fixed several parts since i last went there c. 2019 (including the CRT picture and steering in this dodgy old clip of mine... youtu.be/BS_9H_34XL4)
it was just some sort of haunted walkthrough/ghost train hybrid thing with 3D audio and holograms, not sure sega really did the london location any favours by making it people's very first impression of the place after the entrance lol archive.org/details/Joyp...
the bounty i still have on this laserdisc used in the reception of segaworld london that somehow survived after it shut and very likely remains out there somewhere is genuinely astronomical
slashout, emergency call ambulance and *magical truck adventure* is possibly the most nuts triumvirate they could've came up with for this and they actually did it
thank you based bandai namco for giving me a birthday surprise by actually bothering to drop this at one of the local bowling alley arcades you supply
one day i'm going to have to write about how hayao nakayama knew the way the wind was blowing as far back as late 1992, and very specifically planned ahead to try and counteract this accordingly in both arcades and consoles (but still failed because of course it did), as quotes like this show
edge magazine still having a little ghetto for new arcade games is a funny thing
google photos i hate to break it to you but that is most definitely not 25 Sept 2018
more evidence for the "sega v namco wasn't truly the sega v nintendo of the arcade world" - namja town's been best mates (or a 'sister park', whatever) with joypolis for decades... web.archive.org/web/20020420...
throwback to that one time i went to see the last ever (?) ridge racer full scale in the world and suddenly saw the place with it had this (and this only) strapped to the ceiling beams for no apparent reason
TIL makoto uchida of golden axe, altered beast, die hard arcade fame has quietly left sega (with his shanghai studio likely closed/reduced from where it was) after 38 years, to now work as a university professor... was hoping he'd do a few more years but what a run www.mgt.ous.ac.jp/staff/uchida/
